WHAT YOU’LL DO

We are looking for a Manager, Coalition Support to help power the San Jose early literacy coalition and its 2030 goal: doubling the number of students in East Side San Jose who read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade. The coalition brings together Teach For America, the City of San Jose, school districts, nonprofit organizations, educators, and community leaders, and this temporary role provides the project management, data, and research support that keeps that work moving.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about educational equity with the ability to turn complex, multi-partner conversations into clear plans, clean data, and consistent follow-through. You will prepare the materials that keep stakeholders aligned, maintain the systems that track commitments and progress, and bring research to the table that helps the coalition make evidence-informed decisions about strategies like Ignite, a high-dosage tutoring model, and other literacy initiatives. Your work will also support California-wide coalition efforts by connecting local learning to statewide strategy.

The goal is to give the coalition the systems, data, and insights it needs to move from conversation to coordinated action.

All coalition activities focus on educational initiatives and literacy outcomes. This role does not involve lobbying for legislation or supporting electoral campaigns.

WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

  • Project Management & Execution (35%): Prepare data, materials, and follow-ups for stakeholder meetings to maintain alignment and track next steps. Create systems to monitor outcomes, identify barriers, and adapt strategies as needed.
  • Strategic Planning & Systems-Building (30%): Maintain systems for tracking coalition activities, commitments, and progress toward goals. Clean, organize, and analyze data from multiple sources to identify trends, barriers, and opportunities.
  • Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration (15%): Develop agendas and structure discussions on best practices and research. Capture key takeaways and coordinate follow-ups to advance progress.
  • Research & Landscape Analysis (20%): Conduct research on best practices, local needs, national models, schools, community groups, and stakeholders to deepen coalition knowledge, strengthen engagement, and guide coalition strategy. This includes power mapping, tracking California education legislation, and monitoring updates from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

A WEEK IN THE LIFE

Over the course of any week, the Manager, Coalition Support will spend time:

  • Preparing data, agendas, and materials for upcoming coalition and stakeholder meetings
  • Capturing meeting takeaways and coordinating follow-ups with partners
  • Updating trackers for coalition commitments, activities, and progress toward the 2030 goal
  • Cleaning and analyzing data to surface trends, barriers, and opportunities
  • Researching best practices, national models, and local needs to inform coalition strategy
  • Building and refreshing power maps of schools, community groups, and stakeholders in East Side San Jose
  • Monitoring California education legislation and updates from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing

YOUR EXPERIENCE

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role (minimum qualifications):

  • Demonstrated project management experience, with the ability to organize complex initiatives, manage timelines, and follow through on next steps
  • Experience with research, data management, and systems-building, including cleaning, analyzing, and presenting data from multiple sources
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail across many partners and moving pieces
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparing agendas, meeting materials, summaries, and updates
  • Ability to build trust and collaborate with a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Flexibility and adaptability when priorities shift
  • Commitment to educational equity and belief in the potential of all students to succeed

BONUS (preferred qualifications)

  • Experience with power mapping or stakeholder analysis
  • Strategic and analytical, able to see the big picture while diving into data and details
  • Willing to work occasional evening or weekend hours and travel within San Jose for coalition meetings

YOUR FUTURE TEAM

You will join the School, Community & California Policy team at Teach For America Bay Area, led by Lorena Chavez. Our team builds partnerships with schools, districts, city leaders, and community organizations so that more students in the Bay Area have access to an excellent education. We work at the intersection of local relationships and statewide strategy, connecting what is happening in San Jose classrooms and communities to broader efforts across California. Right now, a core focus is the San Jose early literacy coalition and our shared goal of doubling the number of East Side San Jose students reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade by 2030. We are collaborative, curious, and committed to turning shared goals into real progress for kids.
