What they need

Manager, Data Center Infrastructure

Location: United States

About the Company

My client is a rapidly growing AI infrastructure and cloud provider, developing large-scale data center capacity to support AI and high-performance computing workloads.

As the business continues to expand across the US and Europe, we are looking for two experienced Data Center Infrastructure Managers to support the identification, technical evaluation and acquisition of new data center sites.

Position Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in identifying and evaluating new data center opportunities across the US or Europe, working directly with senior leadership on major infrastructure expansion projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating prospective data center sites, including existing facilities, brownfield developments and greenfield opportunities, ensuring each location meets the infrastructure requirements necessary to support high-performance AI cloud operations.

The role will focus heavily on technical due diligence, assessing the electrical, mechanical, power and infrastructure capabilities of potential sites.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in data center engineering, construction or commissioning, with the ability to independently assess site suitability, identify infrastructure limitations and advise on development feasibility.

This is a highly technical, hands-on position requiring extensive site visits and collaboration with engineering, construction, development and leadership teams.

Key Responsibilities

Site Selection & Development

  • Evaluate existing data centers, brownfield sites and greenfield development opportunities.
  • Lead technical due diligence on prospective sites, including reviewing virtual data rooms (VDRs) and coordinating with site owners, developers and intermediaries.
  • Assess engineering drawings, available power, water, fibre connectivity, land ownership, site layouts, equipment and infrastructure documentation.
  • Conduct site visits, inspections and technical evaluations to validate development assumptions.
  • Develop site evaluation frameworks, scoring criteria and prioritisation metrics.
  • Provide clear go/no-go recommendations based on technical suitability, infrastructure risks and development feasibility.
  • Evaluate available power capacity, electrical and mechanical infrastructure, site constraints and future expansion potential.
  • Compare and prioritise opportunities based on their ability to support large-scale AI and GPU cloud operations.

Technical Due Diligence

  • Assess electrical infrastructure, including substations, transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, generators and power distribution.
  • Evaluate mechanical infrastructure, including HVAC, chillers, cooling towers, air cooling and liquid cooling systems.
  • Review electrical and mechanical engineering drawings to identify infrastructure capabilities, constraints and potential upgrades.
  • Assess facilities against concurrently maintainable Tier III data center requirements, with N+1 redundancy as a minimum.
  • Identify infrastructure deficiencies, technical risks and potential capital expenditure requirements.
  • Evaluate facility suitability for high-density AI and GPU computing environments.
  • Identify potential challenges relating to construction, infrastructure upgrades, commissioning and operational readiness.
  • Consolidate technical findings into clear reports and recommendations for senior leadership.

Construction, Commissioning & Delivery

  • Assess construction feasibility for prospective developments and existing facility upgrades.
  • Review engineering designs, construction plans and infrastructure requirements.
  • Evaluate commissioning requirements and technical readiness of prospective facilities.
  • Collaborate with engineering, construction and commissioning teams to validate development assumptions.
  • Engage with owners, operators, developers, consultants and contractors to assess project viability.
  • Provide technical recommendations to support investment and site acquisition decisions.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
  • Ideally 10–15 years of experience across data center engineering, construction, commissioning or technical infrastructure delivery.
  • Previous experience with hyperscalers such as AWS, Google, Microsoft or Meta, or established data center operators such as Equinix, DataBank or similar organisations.
  • Strong ability to read, interpret and critically assess electrical and mechanical engineering drawings.
  • In-depth understanding of Tier III data center infrastructure, design standards and redundancy requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical, mechanical and telecommunications infrastructure within mission-critical facilities.
  • Strong understanding of utility grid connections, power delivery and behind-the-meter (BTM) power solutions.
  • Experience evaluating mechanical cooling infrastructure, including air-cooled and liquid-cooled data center designs.
  • Proven experience conducting technical site assessments, feasibility studies or infrastructure due diligence.
  • Understanding of data center construction processes, commissioning and operational requirements.
  • Ability to challenge technical assumptions, identify inconsistencies and independently validate information provided by developers and site owners.
  • Strong analytical, stakeholder management and technical reporting skills.
  • Comfortable working independently and making recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Willingness to travel extensively (approximately 60–65%) for site assessments.
