Manager, Substations Engineering

Piper Maddox are partnered with a leading transmission lines IPP developing and owning some of the largest transmission and substations projects in the U.S. With a growing portfolio of large-scale, 300–400+ mile high-voltage transmission projects, including HVDC, they are entering an exciting phase of growth and are looking to bring on a Manager, Substations Engineering to help lead the engineering strategy and execution of these substations projects.

The projects are highly complex and relatively rare in the U.S., giving this hire the opportunity to work on some of the most significant transmission infrastructure being developed today. Joining at an early stage of the business's growth, this person will wear multiple hats, work closely with leading external engineering consultants and technology providers, and have significant influence over how projects are engineered and ultimately delivered.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Lead substation and switchyard engineering and design for major power infrastructure projects, coordinating internal teams, external consultants, and key stakeholders.
• Oversee engineering scope, budgets, schedules, and interfaces across transmission, civil/structural, environmental, and construction disciplines.
• Review engineering drawings, calculations, technical studies, and design packages to ensure safety, regulatory compliance, constructability, and cost-effective solutions.
• Manage primary and secondary substation design, including protection and controls, SCADA, communications, equipment specifications, physical layouts, grounding, and high-voltage systems.
• Provide technical support throughout project development, interconnection, permitting, equipment procurement, site assessments, commissioning, and risk mitigation.
• Develop capital cost estimates and conduct technical due diligence for prospective projects and acquisitions, evaluating site suitability, interconnection feasibility, constructability, and equipment lead times.
• Drive engineering standardization and continuous improvement while maintaining strong stakeholder relationships and a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach.
