What they need
Manufacturing Engineer / CAD Engineer
Powder-X | Manchester, Tennessee
Full-Time | Monday–Friday
Powder-X is looking for a highly skilled, detail-oriented Manufacturing Engineer / CAD Engineer to join our established manufacturing operation in Manchester, TN.
This is a hands-on engineering position for someone who understands that great engineering doesn't stop at creating a drawing. The right person will be responsible for translating customer requirements and engineering designs into accurate, organized, production-ready information that allows our manufacturing team to build products correctly, efficiently, and on schedule.
We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, catches problems before they reach the production floor, communicates clearly with both management and production personnel, and takes pride in producing exceptionally accurate engineering documentation.
What You'll Do
- Create, modify, and maintain detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings and models
- Develop production-ready drawings, dimensions, specifications, and documentation
- Prepare and organize engineering information for manufacturing
- Create and maintain laser cutting nests and production files
- Utilize CAD and nesting software to optimize material usage and manufacturing efficiency
- Work with production personnel to resolve drawing, fabrication, fit-up, and manufacturing issues
- Review engineering designs for accuracy, manufacturability, and completeness before releasing them to production
- Interpret customer requirements and convert them into clear manufacturing instructions
- Prepare accurate production packets, parts lists, drawings, cut files, and other production documentation
- Coordinate engineering information with purchasing, production, quality control, and management
- Track engineering projects and ensure required documentation is completed accurately and on time
- Manage engineering revisions and ensure production is always working from the correct version of a drawing or file
- Identify potential manufacturing problems before production begins
- Assist with troubleshooting issues involving fabricated parts, assemblies, dimensions, tolerances, and fit
- Support continuous improvement efforts throughout the manufacturing process
- Maintain organized engineering files and documentation
- Communicate project status, issues, and deadlines effectively
- Meet production and engineering deadlines without sacrificing accuracy
- Assist with improving engineering and production processes as the company continues to grow
Required Qualifications
- CAD and nesting experience required
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and how engineering decisions affect production
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to reliably meet deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to identify discrepancies, errors, and potential production problems before they become costly mistakes
- Ability to work independently while also communicating effectively with production and management
- Strong computer skills and ability to learn new software and systems
- Ability to maintain accurate, organized engineering records and documentation
Preferred Qualifications
- SolidWorks experience highly preferred
- SigmaNEST experience preferred
- Experience with laser cutting and sheet metal manufacturing
- Experience with press brake operations and formed sheet metal
- Experience creating or modifying DXF files
- Experience developing laser nests
- Experience with manufacturing BOMs and parts lists
- Experience creating production drawings and manufacturing documentation
- Experience with CNC manufacturing equipment
- Experience working in a production/manufacturing environment
The Engineer We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is someone who doesn't just complete an engineering task — they own it from beginning to end.
You should be the type of person who looks at a drawing and notices when something doesn't look right. You double-check dimensions. You verify revisions. You make sure the correct files are being sent to production. You understand that a small mistake on an engineering drawing can create hours of unnecessary work, wasted material, production delays, or expensive rework.
We're looking for someone who is:
- Extremely detail-oriented
- Analytical and methodical
- Highly organized
- Dependable and deadline-driven
- Proactive rather than reactive
- A strong problem solver
- An excellent communicator
- Comfortable working directly with production personnel
- Able to prioritize competing deadlines
- Willing to ask questions rather than make assumptions
- Able to work independently without constant supervision
- Proud of producing accurate, professional work
- Focused on finding solutions instead of assigning blame
- Comfortable taking ownership and accountability
- Interested in improving processes rather than simply maintaining the status quo
Manufacturing Mindset
This position requires more than simply knowing CAD software.
You need to understand how a drawing becomes a physical product.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working with engineers, production employees, management, purchasing, and other departments to ensure that the information leaving Engineering is clear, accurate, complete, and usable on the manufacturing floor.
You should be able to look at a design and think:
Can we actually build this? Is it documented correctly? Are the parts identified correctly? Are the dimensions and revisions accurate? Will production have everything they need?
That mindset is extremely important to this position.
Why Join Powder-X?
Powder-X is a growing manufacturing company where engineering has a direct impact on the success of the entire operation. This is an opportunity to become an important part of the engineering and manufacturing process and help build systems that make the company more efficient as we grow.
If you are an engineer who enjoys CAD, manufacturing, problem-solving, production, and building things that actually leave the computer and become real products, we want to hear from you.
