What they need
Manufacturing Engineer
Birmingham Rail | A. Stucki Company
Are you a Manufacturing Engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges, improving manufacturing processes, and turning engineering specifications into practical production solutions? A. Stucki Company is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to support our Birmingham Rail (BRL) division, helping ensure the accurate design, documentation, and production of critical rail infrastructure components.
In this role, you will work closely with engineering, production, sales, and logistics teams to support customer requirements, develop manufacturing tooling, maintain technical drawings, and improve engineering processes. You'll contribute to products such as railroad turnouts, frogs, rails, and switch material that help keep North America's railroads moving.
This position is ideal for an experienced engineering professional who enjoys hands-on problem-solving, understands industrial manufacturing processes, and can independently interpret technical drawings and customer specifications. The role will be based at Birmingham Rail's location in Youngstown, with occasional travel to other BRL locations, expected to be no more than 15%.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Drawings & Documentation: Create, revise, and maintain accurate 2D and 3D technical drawings, layouts, and as-built documentation using AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
- Technical Specification Review: Interpret customer specifications, blueprints, engineering drawings, and bills of materials to develop accurate product documentation and support manufacturing requirements.
- Manufacturing Support: Partner with production personnel to resolve drawing discrepancies, clarify technical requirements, and ensure designs can be accurately executed on the shop floor.
- Tooling & CNC Programming: Design tooling and fixtures required for manufacturing Birmingham Rail components. Write CNC programs when needed or coordinate with external companies and contractors to develop programs.
- ERP & Product Data Management: Maintain accurate material, part, and product information in SAP or other ERP systems to support order processing, production planning, and tracking.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with engineering, sales, production, logistics, and external suppliers to coordinate technical requirements and support timely product delivery.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve engineering workflows, drawing accuracy, documentation practices, data integrity, and operational efficiency.
- Technical Problem-Solving: Investigate discrepancies in drawings, specifications, and product data, coordinating corrective actions with the appropriate teams.
- Additional Engineering Support: Assist with specialized projects, including oversized material shipping layouts, customer technical questions, and participation in technical railroad conferences.
Qualifications/Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or engineering design environment.
- Professional experience using AutoCAD to create and revise technical drawings.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, customer specifications, and bills of materials.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and the relationship between engineering design and production requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Experience with SAP or another ERP system preferred.
- Experience with rail products, structural components, heavy industrial equipment, fabrication, or similar products preferred.
Work Environment & Travel
- Primarily supports the Birmingham Rail division, with travel to other BRL locations as business needs require.
- Travel is expected to be no more than 15%.
- Must be comfortable working in a rail yard environment, including outdoors and on uneven ground such as railroad ballast.
- Must be comfortable working in manufacturing environments that may be hot, cold, loud, or dirty.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
