Math Support Specialist

Description

This position provides supplementary academic and non-cognitive support to individual and small groups of students. This position would assist in staffing the math success drop-lab as well as co-teaching courses in the Algebra sequencing.

Job Duties

• Engage as supporting teaching in a co-taught classroom
• Provide individual and small group support for students visiting the department drop-in lab
• Demonstrates IWCC’s core mission, vision and values
• Facilitate sections of Statistics co-requisite courses
• Can make decisions in matters of significance
• Participation in weekly meetings aimed at student success
• Mentor students from various courses as part of open lab
• Correspondence with students via phone, email, text
• Participation in committees and work groups within the math department
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with students, faculty, and staff
• Assists in the development and implementation of academic and non-cognitive supports for students enrolled in math courses.
• Develops and maintains relationships with math faculty to enhance support resources, expand the student support network, and optimize the impact of student success initiatives.
• Collaborates with math faculty on ways to support students with their math-related academic pursuits
• Aid in the continuous improvement of the co-requisite course for Statistics.
• Identifies non-cognitive challenges and potential risk factors, and provides tailored and targeted co-curricular supports and proactive outreach
• Refers and connects students to and with relevant resources and services on campus, including those available in the Academic Resource Center as well as through Student Support and Outreach.
• Initiates, maintains, and tracks frequent contact with students on a variety of topics and through various means, including face-to-face meetings, email, and phone communication.
• Maintains accurate and timely records of student information
• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• To teach arts and science courses:

  • Master’s degree is required
  • At least 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to articulate in both small and large group settings and with diverse groups of people including co-workers, students, business contacts and at various levels from front-line to administration

• Strong organizational skills including the ability to multitask, to meet deadlines, to maintain and access paper and electronic files, to produce error-free final products, and to manage time and output

• Excellent customer service skills

• Proficient use of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)

• Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently

• Enthusiastic and dedicated to the challenges of helping other people

• Ability to function collaboratively as part of a fast-paced, customer-oriented team

• Professional in communication, appearance, relationships, and responsiveness

• Positive attitude

• Self-starter with the ability to perform with little or no direct supervision

• Ability to pass a background check

• Experience that demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disabled backgrounds of community college students.
• Experience that illustrates a history of successfully collaborating with co-workers on a regular basis to achieve common goals.
• Experience facilitating math skill development.
• Experience monitoring student progress.
• Experience tutoring students and assisting them as they complete homework, and prepare for quizzes and tests.
• Experience that demonstrates a commitment to delivering first-rate service to and exceptional support for students on a daily basis.
• Experience that demonstrates a strong desire to work with a variety of people on a daily basis.
• Experience that exhibits knowledge in techniques that can be used to motivate students.
• Experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully work on and complete several projects at one time.
• Experience in student development at an institution of higher education.

Physical Demands

• The employee frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, telephone and basic office equipment
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear
• Ability to lift up to 10lbs
• Ability to drive company owned or personal vehicle.
