What they need

Edge High School – Northwest Campus | Tucson, Arizona

About Edge High School

Not every student thrives in a traditional high school. At Edge, we believe every student deserves a school where they can succeed.

Founded in 1995, Edge High School is a tuition-free public charter high school serving students across two Tucson campuses. As Pima County's oldest alternative high school, Edge has spent more than 30 years helping students find their path toward graduation and a brighter future.

Our approach to education is different. Rather than relying on traditional lectures and one-size-fits-all instruction, Edge offers a self-paced, mastery-based learning environment where students work toward earning credits with individualized support from educators who know them as learners and as people.

Our students bring diverse backgrounds, experiences, strengths, and challenges. Some have struggled academically, experienced interruptions in their education, or simply haven't found the right fit in a traditional school setting. At Edge, we meet students where they are, build meaningful relationships, and help them rediscover their confidence and capacity to succeed.

Position Summary

Edge High School is seeking a part-time Math Teaching Assistant for our Northwest Campus in Tucson.

We are looking for a patient, compassionate, and student-centered individual who enjoys helping young people build confidence and develop essential mathematics skills.

At Edge, teaching assistants serve as facilitators, tutors, mentors, motivators, and advocates, working alongside classroom teachers to help students take ownership of their learning and make meaningful progress toward graduation.

Our Math Teaching Assistant will support students completing mathematics coursework through Edgenuity, our online curriculum platform, while providing individualized tutoring, reinforcing foundational math concepts, assisting with targeted interventions, and helping students overcome barriers to academic success.

Many Edge students enter high school with significant gaps in foundational math skills. The ideal candidate understands that helping a student master fractions, solve an equation, or finally understand a concept that has frustrated them for years can be just as meaningful as helping them complete an advanced mathematics course.

This position is especially well suited for someone who enjoys working one-on-one with students, explaining math concepts in different ways, celebrating small victories, and helping young people develop confidence in their ability to learn.

Key Responsibilities

Individualized Math Support & Tutoring

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring to students working through self-paced mathematics courses.
  • Assist students with foundational math skills, including number sense, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, algebraic reasoning, and problem-solving.
  • Support students completing coursework in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, and other high school mathematics subjects.
  • Help students understand mathematical concepts by breaking complex problems into manageable steps.
  • Reinforce classroom instruction and provide additional practice and guidance when students struggle with specific skills.
  • Assist students in navigating Edgenuity and other educational technology platforms.
  • Encourage students to develop effective study habits, mathematical reasoning, and independent problem-solving skills.

Student Engagement & Relationship Building

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students, recognizing that meaningful connections are essential to academic success.
  • Create a welcoming, respectful, and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.
  • Demonstrate patience and encouragement when working with students who experience math anxiety, frustration, or low academic confidence.
  • Motivate students who may have experienced academic disengagement, interrupted educational experiences, or repeated struggles with mathematics.
  • Celebrate student progress and reinforce a growth mindset.
  • Help students set achievable goals, monitor their progress, and take responsibility for their learning.

Academic Intervention & Student Progress

  • Work alongside the Math Teacher to identify students who need additional instructional support.
  • Assist with targeted mathematics interventions through Edge's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), including our WINS intervention program.
  • Support students in using IXL to strengthen foundational mathematics skills and address identified learning gaps.
  • Help students interpret feedback, correct errors, and demonstrate understanding of mathematical concepts.
  • Monitor student engagement and progress, communicating concerns and successes to the classroom teacher.
  • Provide instructional assistance to students with IEPs and 504 Plans in accordance with teacher direction and individual student accommodations.

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the Math Teacher, school leadership, exceptional education staff, and other student support personnel.
  • Reinforce classroom expectations and contribute to a positive, respectful learning environment.
  • Assist with instructional materials, student progress monitoring, and other classroom support activities as directed.
  • Participate in relevant professional learning and staff development opportunities.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and follow school policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to Edge's positive, student-centered school culture.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate's Degree or higher
  • Strong foundational mathematics skills, particularly in arithmetic, pre-algebra, and algebra.
  • Ability to explain mathematical concepts clearly, patiently, and in multiple ways.
  • Possess a valid Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Class 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with teenagers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Patience, empathy, adaptability, and a genuine commitment to helping students succeed.
  • Comfort using computers, educational technology, and online learning platforms.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and other school personnel.

Preferred

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in mathematics, education, or a related field, or college coursework demonstrating strong mathematics proficiency.
  • Previous experience as a teaching assistant, paraprofessional, tutor, or instructional aide.
  • Experience supporting students in middle school or high school mathematics.
  • Experience working in alternative education, credit recovery, or nontraditional school settings.
  • Experience working with students with IEPs, 504 Plans, or significant academic skill gaps.
  • Familiarity with Edgenuity, IXL, or other online instructional platforms.
  • Experience supporting mathematics interventions or small-group instruction.
  • Experience working with students who have experienced academic disengagement or other barriers to school success.

What Makes Working at Edge Different?

At Edge High School, you won't spend your day simply supervising students or watching them complete assignments.

Instead, you'll have opportunities to:

  • Help students experience success in math. Work individually and in small groups with students who need additional explanation, encouragement, and opportunities to practice.
  • Build relationships that matter. Get to know students as individuals and help them recognize their own potential.
  • Make a visible difference. Experience the satisfaction of helping a student understand a concept they once believed was beyond their ability.
  • Be part of a supportive team. Collaborate with educators who believe that students deserve second chances, flexible pathways, and adults who won't give up on them.
  • Focus on growth, not just grades. Help students develop the confidence, persistence, and problem-solving skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Join the Edge Team

We believe that a student's past academic experiences do not define their future potential. We also believe that a caring, patient adult who takes the time to explain something differently can change the way a student sees themselves as a learner.

You don't need to be a certified teacher to make a meaningful difference at Edge. You do need to believe in young people, enjoy helping them learn, and recognize that progress often happens one small breakthrough at a time.

If you have strong math skills, enjoy working with teenagers, and find fulfillment in helping students overcome challenges, we encourage you to apply.
