Job Title: Mechanic

Reports To: Director of Operations

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary: The primary responsibility is to perform highly skilled mechanical service, diagnostic mechanical and repair work on 18 passenger cutaway buses, transit vans, and related vehicles. This position will work toward a common goal of providing an efficient, cost effective, reliable fleet.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Receive and complete work orders in a timely manner.
• Ability to successfully repair vehicles and equipment in addition to recording parts used and work completed/time spent on assignments.
• Ability to coordinate with appropriate staff to schedule repairs.
• Ability to perform complex troubleshooting and repairs on a wide range of equipment including but not limited to the diagnoses of equipment and vehicle malfunctions.
• Ability to install repair and reconditioning of auxiliary and accessory equipment used on vehicles, maintains repairs, and reconditions engines, pumps, transmissions, differentials, distributors, hydraulics, electrical systems, cooling systems, etc.
• Ability to use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
• Ability to inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
• Ability to successfully adjust and reline brakes, aligns wheels, tightens bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
• Ability to successfully raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
• Ability to perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
• Performs test drives on trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
• Successfully examines and adjusts protective guards, loose bolts, and lift system.
• Ability to attach test instruments to equipment as well as read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
• Ability to properly inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
• Ability to properly inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors.
• Successfully operates a variety of machines and equipment used in general mechanical repair and maintenance work.
• Performs necessary welding, body, fender and fabricating work on vehicle and equipment as needed.
• Successfully ensure operations are carried out in a safe and efficient manner.
• Ability to complete maintenance reports including maintenance activity, parts usage on a regular basis.
• Ability to operate all types of vehicles used to transport occupants and possesses a Commercial Driver License with (P) endorsement, applicable to all vehicles owned, operated, and serviced by the Clinton Area Transit System. *
• Ability to familiarize themselves with the Clinton County and surrounding areas. *
• Ability to remain alert and exercise good judgment concerning emergency situations, abnormal driving conditions, and responding to disabled transit vehicles. *
• Ability to perform other duties as assigned by Management.
• Ability to attend various trainings as designated by Management.

Language Ability:

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Data Entry and Maintenance Software.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Certificates and Licenses:

• Commercial Driver License with (P) endorsement,
• Valid Driver License
• Certifications in related scope of work.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to, Vehicle grease and oil, Dirt and Dust and work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, Blood Borne Pathogens and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
