What they need

About the role

As an Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for delivering practical, manufacturable mechanical design solutions based on customer-provided designs, drawings, specifications and technical requirements. You will work closely with customers, engineers, manufacturing teams and other stakeholders to interpret requirements, develop detailed manufacturing designs and ensure designs are suitable for production. You will be involved throughout the design and manufacturing process, using your mechanical engineering knowledge to identify potential issues, resolve design challenges and ensure the final manufactured product meets the required specifications, tolerances, quality and performance requirements. This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone who enjoys taking technically challenging customer requirements and turning them into accurate, practical and manufacturable solutions.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical designs and detailed manufacturing drawings from customer-provided designs, drawings and specifications, collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure designs are technically and commercially feasible.
  • Undertake detailed mechanical design work, including 3D modelling, drawing creation and design verification through analysis and simulation where required.
  • Select appropriate mechanical parts and materials, considering performance, availability, obsolescence, manufacturability and cost.
  • Apply GD&T, datum structures and tolerance principles to produce accurate and functional designs.
  • Carry out tolerance stack-up and tolerance analysis to verify product performance and manufacturability.
  • Apply design for manufacture and assembly principles, taking into consideration manufacturing processes such as machining, fabrication and welding.
  • Provide engineering support throughout the manufacturing process, ensuring designs and specifications are correctly interpreted and achieved.
  • Investigate and resolve design and manufacturing issues, identifying practical engineering solutions.
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings, design documentation and engineering data within the company ERP system.
  • Identify opportunities to improve product performance, efficiency, reliability and manufacturability.

About you

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering
  • A minimum of 3–5 years' experience in mechanical design engineering, preferably within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Strong experience in mechanical design, 3D modelling and detailed engineering drawing.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or a comparable 3D CAD package.
  • A strong understanding of GD&T, datum structures, tolerancing and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Experience with design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA) and an understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, welding and fabrication.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to translate engineering requirements into practical design solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality engineering work.
  • The ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned design projects while contributing effectively within a wider engineering team.
