Job Summary

Design it. Engineer it. Trust it with lives!

Step into a role where engineering meets real-world impact. As a Mechanical Design Engineer at our Denham site, you’ll join a team of experienced engineers designing and developing the mechanical technology behind life-saving aerospace equipment. From initial concept through to detailed design, testing and production, your work will help deliver products built to perform in some of the most demanding and safety-critical environments.

Direct Impact, Global Scale. Life-Saving Mission.

At Martin-Baker, the work we do matters. We design, manufacture and support life-saving equipment used by aircrew around the world. Our products operate in demanding environments, where quality, reliability and attention to detail are critical.

We’re proud of our long history in aerospace and defence, while remaining focused on the future. Joining Martin-Baker means becoming part of a business with a clear purpose, strong engineering capability and a long-term commitment to its people, products and customers.

Whether you work in engineering, operations, commercial, finance, supply chain or support functions, your contribution helps deliver equipment that protects lives. It is challenging work, but it is also meaningful, and with over 7,700 lives saved, it gives our people the opportunity to be part of something with real impact.

The Opportunity

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll join a collaborative, multi-disciplinary engineering environment, working alongside mechanical, systems, manufacturing and other engineering specialists to develop and support Martin-Baker products.

You’ll contribute across the full design lifecycle, from generating initial concepts and top-level layouts through to detailed design, technical calculations, design reviews, testing and product acceptance.

You’ll work on a diverse range of products and technologies, including mechanical components, mechanisms, machines, support and test equipment, textiles and associated electronic, electrical and pyrotechnic systems. You’ll also have the opportunity to work closely with internal and external customers to develop practical, commercially viable solutions that meet demanding engineering, regulatory and customer requirements.

This is an exciting opportunity for a mechanical engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering problems, developing practical designs and seeing their work progress from concept through to a finished product.

This role is based at the Denham site, with hybrid working considered following the probation period (6 months).

What You’ll Do

  • Develop mechanical design concepts and detailed solutions that meet customer, regulatory and internal engineering requirements, from initial layouts through to final product definition.
  • Produce high-quality 3D CAD models, engineering drawings and PDI, applying GD&T and relevant UK/US engineering standards.
  • Carry out engineering calculations, technical analysis and trade studies to optimise designs for performance, manufacturability, cost, mass and reliability.
  • Produce and maintain engineering documentation including BOMs, DFMEAs, tolerance analysis, mass reports and technical reports.
  • Lead and support design reviews, trial installations, testing, customer activities and engineering changes, including retrofit, modification, clearance and interchangeability work.
  • Collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams to resolve engineering challenges and identify opportunities to improve product design, quality, manufacturability and processes

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience across the full mechanical design lifecycle, ideally designing machines, mechanisms, test equipment or similar engineered products.
  • Strong 3D CAD, engineering drawing and GD&T skills, with experience developing designs from concept through to detailed product definition using UK and/or US standards.
  • Good knowledge of engineering materials, manufacturing processes and design for manufacture and assembly, with the ability to make practical, commercially viable design decisions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in engineering calculations and technical analysis; knowledge of FEA, motion simulation or tools such as Mathcad, TK Solver, NX Motion Simulation or ADAMS is desirable.
  • Excellent communication, workload planning and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple activities, present technical information and work collaboratively within demanding time, quality and technical constraints.
  • A Mechanical, Aerospace or related Engineering degree (ideally 2:1 or above), or HND/C with relevant industry experience. Aerospace/defence experience, knowledge of UK Defence Standards/US MIL standards and professional engineering membership are desirable.

Our Values

At Martin-Baker, we value professionalism, understanding, teamwork, humility, accountability and integrity. We look for people who take pride in their work, collaborate openly and act with care because the work we do matters.

What We Offer

  • Excellent pension package with strong employer support — Martin-Baker contributes 9% of your salary (non-contributory to the employee)
  • Life Assurance
  • Lunchtime finish on a Friday
  • Personalised training and development plan
  • Healthcare plan
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave
  • Martin-Baker + (retail discounts platform)
  • Occupational Health team
  • Workplace Nursery Benefit scheme
  • Cycle to work scheme

After submitting your application, your details will be reviewed and the recruitment team will be in touch.

First stage interview – an initial virtual discussion to explore your background, motivations and suitability for the role.

Final stage interview – a face-to-face technical assessment with members of the mechanical engineering leadership team, allowing you to demonstrate your technical capability, engineering approach and problem-solving skills.

We believe in equal opportunity, committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone is respected. We want you to be able to do your best work.

Martin-Baker is a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, showing our support and commitment to our Armed Forces and their families, proudly supporting those who serve.
