What they need

Systems West Engineers

Location choice: Bend, Oregon | Springfield, Oregon | West Linn, Oregon

Systems West Engineers is a multi-disciplinary team delivering thoughtful, technically rigorous solutions to complex MEP building systems, with sustainability at the center of how we think, design, and lead. We believe high-performing buildings should reduce carbon, conserve resources, and support healthier communities, and we bring that mindset to every project.

We show up as a leading team player, serving as a resource that elevates the work of others through clarity, coordination, and strong technical judgment. Our values guide how we work: support community, pursue excellence, work effectively, be responsible, serve our clients, sustain the environment, and think creatively.

Mechanical Engineer

This role is built for a mechanical engineer who is seeking to lead aspects of the mechanical design and continue to grow their engineering competencies and confidence. You’ve got your mechanical professional engineer registration, are ready to stamp drawings where you lead the design scope, and are seeking more exposure to complex mechanical systems.

In this role, you’ll support project delivery by producing high-quality mechanical design work under the guidance of a Project Manager. You’ll contribute as a Project Engineer to the collective effort across our design MEP/FP design team.

You’ll Love This Role If You…

  • Enjoy taking ownership of mechanical designs and leading projects from concept through construction.
  • Like solving complex technical problems and developing practical, sustainable, and energy-efficient solutions.
  • Want to make an impact on your community through the buildings and facilities you help create.
  • Take pride in being a trusted technical resource who can provide direction, make sound engineering decisions, and deliver quality work.
  • Enjoy collaborating with clients, architects, contractors, and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Want opportunities to lead and mentor others while continuing to expand your own technical expertise.

What You’ll Do…

  • Lead the development and execution of mechanical system designs for facility evaluations, studies, design, construction administration, and post-construction services.
  • Analyze, design, coordinate, and document HVAC and mechanical systems, equipment, and controls, including air distribution, hydronic, steam and condensate, fuel, and automatic control systems.
  • Serve as the lead engineer for assigned project scope, providing technical direction to engineers, designers, BIM staff, and other project team members.
  • Take ownership of assigned scope, schedule, labor budget, technical quality, and deliverables while proactively communicating risks, changes, or resource needs to the Project Manager.
  • Develop design approaches, calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and construction administration documentation.
  • Lead quality control for assigned work, coordinating reviews and ensuring comments are appropriately resolved and incorporated.
  • Coordinate across disciplines and directly with architects, consultants, contractors, clients, and Owners to resolve technical and project coordination issues.
  • Participate in client and project meetings, communicate design concepts, respond to technical questions, and help guide collaborative decision-making.
  • Support and mentor developing engineers and designers through technical guidance, delegation, and review of their work.
  • Contribute to the continued improvement of SWE design standards, specifications, calculations, details, workflows, and quality-control practices.

Successful candidates are…

  • Technically confident: You can independently evaluate engineering problems, develop solutions, and provide direction within your areas of expertise.
  • Accountable: You take ownership of scope, schedule, budget, quality, and follow-through and raise issues early when something could affect project success.
  • Collaborative: You communicate clearly, navigate multidisciplinary coordination well, and build productive relationships with clients and project partners.
  • A developing leader: You enjoy helping others succeed through technical guidance, mentoring, and thoughtful delegation.
  • Organized and proactive: You can manage competing priorities, anticipate project needs, and keep work moving without waiting to be directed.
  • Growth-minded: You continue building your technical, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills and look for better ways to deliver the work.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and coordinating building mechanical systems and supporting projects through study, design, bidding, construction administration, and closeout.
  • Broad proficiency in HVAC and mechanical system analysis, design, equipment application, controls, calculations, specifications, and construction documentation.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams and providing technical direction to engineers and designers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, Owners, consultants, contractors, and internal project teams.
  • Proficiency in MS Office; Revit experience strongly preferred.
  • Healthcare facility design preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred, particularly for candidates qualified to serve as Engineer in Responsible Charge.
