What they need

We don’t build rockets. We make the machines that cut the metal they’re made from.

Somewhere today a bar of superalloy is being cut to length before it becomes a turbine blade in a jet engine, an electric generator, or a rocket engine part. Someone designed the machine that made that cut, built it in a shop in Ohio, programmed it to optimize its cutting operation without user intervention, and made it run every shift for twenty years. That’s what we do.

We also want to know what you do when no one is paying you. The person who rebuilt a motorcycle engine in the garage. Who runs a 3D printer at home. Who took the dishwasher apart to find out why it quit. Who spent last weekend building a tool no one asked for. If that sounds like you, keep reading.

Who We Are

Everett Industries has built abrasive cut-off saws in Warren, Ohio for more than sixty years. Our saws and wheels run in foundries, forges, and investment casting houses, and in the shops that build jet engines and launch vehicles. We cut what other machines can’t: superalloys, titanium, tool steel, risers off castings. We make basic tool room or fab shop saws, automated systems, and one-off cutting cells built around a customer’s part.

We operate the way the best of our customers do. The engineer who designs a machine watches it get built, stands next to it when it first runs, and fixes what went wrong. There are no layers between you and the result. You’ll see your work in steel within months, not years. Orders are growing and the problems are getting more complex. We need a mechanical design engineer who will own a project from the first sales call to the day it ships...and for the balance of its useful life.

Who You Are

We’re not screening for a resume. We’re screening for a type of person. These are the things that matter to us:

  • You are curious. You want to know how things work and why they fail, and you go find out. Your engineering degree gives you the tools to do that. Your instinct to keep digging is what makes all of that useful here.

  • You finish what you start. You take an idea, design it, analyze it, and see it through to a working result yourself. You do not hand off and wait for someone else to close the loop.

  • You direct your own learning. You identify what you need to know, you go learn it, and you bring it back. We fund that and support that. We do not prescribe it… although we encourage and expect it.

  • Undocumented work is incomplete work. If your projects could not be picked up by someone else in your absence, that is a gap — not an explanation.

  • You build things on your own time. A project car, a CNC router in the basement, a robot, a boat, a house you are renovating yourself. We want to hear about it, because it tells us more than a transcript does.

  • You speak up through the right channels. When something is wrong, you say so, to the person who can act on it. Concerns that go sideways instead of upward help no one.

  • You work well in a small company. Requirements evolve, priorities shift, and there is no bureaucracy between a good idea and trying it. You find that energizing rather than unsettling even though it means you are responsible for the results.

The Role

This is a hands-on design role at the center of what we do. You will take a customer’s requirements from concept through detailed design, analysis, production release, and support on the floor — and you will own that whole arc. Nobody hands off to a project manager here. The person we hire sees the job through.

Everyone here should know where your projects stand without asking. That is not a report we want from you. It is part of doing the job well.

What You Will Do

Design & Engineering

  • Turn customer’s process requirements and sales requirements into fully constrained, producible mechanical designs in Autodesk Inventor.

  • Identify the need for and perform engineering calculations behind every design: load analysis, component sizing, and material selection.

  • Produce complete 3D models and GD&T-compliant production drawings under appropriate revision control.

  • Work with our controls and electrical engineers to integrate sensors, actuators, and automation components into designs that are safe, functional, and buildable.

  • Release complete engineering packages to the production floor — models, drawings, BOMs, and supporting documentation the shop can build from without coming back with questions.

Collaboration & Ownership

  • Sit with the sales team during quoting and proposals to give technical input and translate customer processing needs into machine requirements.

  • Lead design reviews with the engineering team before release, not after a problem shows up… and be able to accept the “best” concept, even if it is not your baby.

  • Keep project status current and visible at all times. If a deliverable is at risk, raise it before it becomes a problem… protect your team’s commitments.

  • Support the machinists, fabricators and builders throughout the build, and stand on the floor with them when the machine runs for the first time. Remember, their skills may not have been acquired in a university, but they are just as essential as yours to our customer who pays us all.

  • Document your work so that someone else could pick up any project of yours tomorrow and so that our customer’s maintenance team can support their operation.

Continuous Improvement

  • Look for better ways to design, document, and build — including new automation and AI-assisted engineering tools — and bring them to the team.

  • Apply your engineering judgment to operational problems, not only design problems. The person who notices the process is wrong and proposes a better one is the person we want.

  • Travel occasionally (4-8 days per quarter) for customer site visits and professional development.

What You Need

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Demonstrated experience developing mechanical systems from concept through detailed design and documentation.

  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor or a comparable parametric 3D CAD platform… but understand that we work in Inventor.

  • Working knowledge of GD&T standards, ANSI/ISO/EN and other standards and engineering drawing practices.

  • Ability to identify the need for, perform, and document mechanical engineering and safety calculations for sizing, load analysis, and material selection.

  • Working understanding of controls and control theory including sensors, actuators, and automation components and how they integrate into mechanical assemblies.

  • Clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to work across sales, engineering, and production.

Preferred

  • Three to five years of mechanical design experience in machine design or industrial equipment.

  • Experience with engineered-to-order or custom automated machinery.

  • Exposure to abrasive cutting, milling, turning, grinding, material handling, and similar material removal and processing environments.

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted design and engineering tools, and a habit of bringing new, productive technology into your workflow.

Short on years? Apply anyway. If you are early in your career but you have built things, taught yourself things, and can show us, we will weigh that against experience. An indomitable work ethic and a genuine drive to get better count here. We invest in and will develop people who invest in themselves.

How We Work

Everett is a small company with a clear point of view about what makes someone excellent here. These are not values on a wall — they are how we evaluate performance, make hiring decisions, and have honest conversations when something isn’t working.

Accountability & Ownership You own your work, your outcomes, and your communication. Ownership is not assigned by title. It is the baseline expectation for everyone in this building. Accountability is not a talk out behind the barn after the fact… it is clear expectations and frank communications… both ways… throughout the process.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement We want people who see a better way and say so — then do something about it. That applies to your design work and to how the work gets done. The intersection of engineering skill and operational thinking is where we grow.

Self-Directed Learning This is a learning organization. We fund development and support it actively. But the direction comes from you. Identify what you want to build, make a case for it, and pursue it. The people who thrive here do not wait to be told what to learn next.
