What they need
Mechanical Design Engineer – Custom Manufacturing & Automation
Harvard Factory Automation, Inc.
Job Overview
Harvard Factory Automation, Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. This position offers the opportunity to apply your mechanical design experience to a variety of custom-engineered manufacturing and automation projects.
Working directly with customers on an order-to-order basis, you will develop and modify mechanical designs to meet specific application requirements and customer objectives. From initial concepts and 3D modeling through detailed manufacturing drawings and production support, you will be involved in multiple stages of the design process.
We are looking for a detail-oriented, resourceful engineer with practical SolidWorks experience, sound mechanical design fundamentals, and the ability to manage multiple projects. The ideal candidate is comfortable working both independently and collaboratively, enjoys solving engineering challenges, and is interested in seeing their designs progress from concept to finished equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and revise 3D models of parts, components, and assemblies using SolidWorks.
- Prepare and revise detailed engineering drawings for customer approval and manufacturing.
- Participate in design reviews and collaborate with customers and internal teams to develop effective design solutions.
- Manage multiple projects while maintaining schedules, accuracy, and organized documentation.
- Support manufacturing and assembly teams by troubleshooting design-related issues and implementing corrective actions.
- Ensure designs consider manufacturing processes, material properties, structural requirements, and practical assembly considerations.
- Maintain accurate and organized engineering documentation throughout the design process.
- Contribute to a collaborative, professional, and positive workplace environment.
Qualifications
- 2–4 years of mechanical design or related engineering experience preferred.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D modeling, assemblies, and engineering drawings.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, manufacturing processes, and material properties.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general computer applications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work directly with customer representatives.
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.
- Practical exposure to manufacturing, machine design, or product development.
Preferred Experience
- Factory automation, custom machinery, or special-purpose equipment design.
- Plastic injection molding, tooling, or injection molding automation.
- Experience working with manufacturing, machining, fabrication, or assembly teams.
- Familiarity with mechanical components, pneumatics, motion systems, or material handling equipment.
Working Environment
- Combination of office-based engineering work and time spent on the manufacturing floor.
- Occasional local travel to customer and supplier facilities.
- Regular collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and customer teams.
What Makes This Opportunity Different?
At Harvard Factory Automation, you will work on a variety of customer-specific engineering challenges rather than repetitive, standardized designs. This role provides the opportunity to take ownership of projects, work closely with experienced manufacturing personnel, and see your designs become finished products and equipment.
We welcome engineers who bring practical design experience, a strong working knowledge of SolidWorks, and a desire to develop effective, manufacturable solutions for our customers.
