About Q Engineering

Q Engineering is a Canadian engineering and building design consulting firm specializing in residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and infrastructure projects. We provide integrated engineering and building design services, including architectural design, structural engineering, mechanical (HVAC), civil/grading, interior design, shop drawings, and permit coordination. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to deliver innovative, practical, and code-compliant solutions from concept through permit approval and construction support.

Role Overview

As a Mechanical Designer, you will prepare residential HVAC and plumbing calculations, drawings, and permit documents for Ontario projects. You will complete accurate work independently, coordinate with architectural and structural drawings, and respond promptly to project and municipal comments. The role begins with residential HVAC and plumbing work, with the opportunity to support broader mechanical drawings and calculations under the direction of Q Engineering’s future Senior Mechanical Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform residential heat loss and heat gain calculations using Wrightsoft Right Suite, including applicable Canadian F280 procedures when required.
  • Prepare HVAC layouts, duct sizing, equipment selection, ventilation design, schedules, and coordinated AutoCAD drawings for permit submission.
  • Design residential plumbing systems, including domestic water distribution, sanitary drainage, venting, fixture layouts, risers, and related schedules.
  • Coordinate HVAC and plumbing systems with architectural, structural, and other discipline drawings and identify conflicts before submission.
  • Review project information, drawings, and client requirements and raise missing information or design concerns promptly.
  • Prepare permit-ready drawing packages, calculations, and supporting documents in accordance with Q Engineering standards.
  • Address municipal plan-examiner comments and revise calculations and drawings until the applicable permit comments are resolved.
  • Maintain organized project files, drawing revisions, calculation records, and daily time and activity records.
  • Attend online coordination meetings and communicate clearly with Q Engineering’s project management and design teams.
  • Support future mechanical projects and assist the Senior Mechanical Engineer with broader drawings, calculations, and schedules as the department expands.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of practical residential HVAC design experience; residential plumbing design experience is also required.
  • Demonstrated experience using AutoCAD to prepare coordinated mechanical permit drawings.
  • Working knowledge of heating and cooling loads, equipment selection, duct design, ventilation, domestic water, drainage, and venting systems.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and structural drawings and complete work independently in a remote environment.
  • Strong English communication, organization, quality-control, and deadline-management skills.
  • Reliable computer, high-speed internet, and ability to attend agreed coordination meetings during Toronto business hours.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Wrightsoft Right Suite and residential F280 calculations is preferred.
  • Experience with Ontario residential projects, the Ontario Building Code, permit submissions, and municipal mechanical/plumbing review comments is preferred.
  • Experience with heat pumps, furnaces, air conditioners, HRVs or ERVs, multi-unit residential or small commercial mechanical work is preferred; Revit or other mechanical modelling experience is an asset.

Q Engineering – Professional Standards & Engagement Requirements

The Mechanical Designer is expected to maintain accurate calculations, drawings, project files, and activity records; coordinate effectively with project management and design teams; protect confidential information; and meet agreed schedules and quality standards. This engagement does not appoint the contractor as a professional engineer. The contractor must not independently sign, seal, certify, submit, or make commitments on behalf of Q Engineering, and all work remains subject to Q Engineering’s technical review, approval, and applicable professional requirements.
