What they need

Mechanical Engineer – Building Services Canberra, ACT | Permanent, Full-Time | $90,000–$130,000 + Super | Negotiable on Experience
The Opportunity
A leading mechanical contractor is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with building services experience to join their team in Canberra, working on the delivery of large-scale Defence projects.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity suited to a Mechanical Engineer with approximately 2–10 years' experience across building services, either within a consultancy or mechanical contracting environment.

Working closely with the Design Manager, you will play an important role in the technical delivery of the project, supporting the construction team and ensuring the mechanical services are coordinated, constructible and delivered in accordance with the project requirements.

As this is a Construct Only project, the role is focused on the technical delivery and coordination of the mechanical installation rather than responsibility for the overall design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Design Manager, site team, consultants and other project stakeholders to support the technical delivery of the mechanical services.
  • Review consultant design documentation, specifications and equipment selections to identify discrepancies, constructability issues and coordination requirements.
  • Coordinate mechanical services with architectural, structural, electrical, hydraulic, fire and other building services disciplines.
  • Raise and manage RFIs, technical queries and design clarifications with the consultant and project team.
  • Provide technical engineering support to the site team, assisting with the resolution of construction and installation issues.
  • Review supplier and subcontractor technical documentation and ensure proposed equipment and systems comply with the project requirements.
  • Assist with equipment procurement, technical evaluations and supplier coordination.
  • Support QA/QC processes, inspections, testing and verification of mechanical installations.
  • Assist with testing, commissioning and balancing activities and the resolution of commissioning issues.
  • Monitor technical deliverables and assist the Design Manager with managing engineering requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contribute to project documentation, including commissioning records, O&M documentation and as-built information.
  • Work collaboratively with the construction team to ensure mechanical services are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with the approved design and project specifications.

About You
You will be a Mechanical Engineer with a background in building services, ideally having gained experience either with a mechanical contractor or building services consultancy.
We are open to candidates with approximately 2–10 years' experience, provided you have a strong understanding of building services and a genuine interest in working on complex mechanical construction projects.

You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years' building services experience within a consultancy or contractor environment.
  • Experience with HVAC and/or broader mechanical building services.
  • An understanding of mechanical services design, construction and coordination.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively with consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
  • A practical, construction-focused approach to engineering.
  • Strong attention to detail and an ability to manage competing priorities.

Previous experience working on Defence, government, health, data centre, infrastructure or other complex/high-security projects would be advantageous, but is not essential.

Security Requirements
Due to the nature of the projects, applicants must be Australian Citizens and be willing and eligible to undertake the process for an NV1 security clearance.

What's on Offer

  • Permanent, full-time position with a leading mechanical contractor.
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale Defence projects in Canberra.
  • Direct exposure to complex mechanical building services and construction delivery.
  • Close collaboration with an experienced Design Manager and project team.
  • Strong opportunity for professional development and career progression.
  • $90,000–$130,000 + Super, dependent on experience and technical capability.

If you're a Mechanical Engineer looking to move into the contractor side of building services—or already working within a mechanical contracting environment and looking for your next major project—this is an excellent opportunity to join an established contractor delivering some of Canberra's most significant projects.
