About Cision Vision
Cision Vision is a medical imaging startup built on technology developed at MIT. Our real-time, label-free infrared imaging helps surgeons visualize critical anatomy during procedures. With funding support from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), we are turning this technology into practical products for clinical use. We are expanding our engineering team, offering the opportunity to shape new medical devices from early prototypes through clinical adoption.
The role
We are seeking a hands-on mechanical engineer to turn imaging concepts into working hardware through rapid prototyping. You will design, fabricate, assemble, and test mechanical prototypes, working closely with optics, electronics, software, and clinical collaborators. You should enjoy moving between CAD and the workbench, solving integration problems, and using experiments to guide design improvements. We welcome candidates from junior through senior levels, with responsibilities and ownership matched to experience.
Responsibilities
- Translate technical requirements and user needs into mechanical concepts, CAD designs, and functional prototypes.
- Design camera housings, optical mounts, illumination assemblies, handheld devices, and accessories.
- Select fabrication methods—including 3D printing, machining, and off-the-shelf components—that balance speed, cost, and the needs of each experiment.
- Build, assemble, modify, and troubleshoot prototypes; coordinate with machine shops and suppliers to obtain parts.
- Integrate mechanical components with cameras, optics, electronics, and illumination systems.
- Develop test fixtures and experiments to evaluate alignment, fit, ergonomics, thermal performance, and mechanical reliability; use results to guide design iterations.
- Maintain CAD files, drawings, bills of materials, and build and test records; refine promising prototypes for repeatable assembly and eventual production.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Relevant mechanical design and hardware development experience. For junior candidates, this may include internships or substantial academic or personal engineering projects.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, and test mechanical components or assemblies.
- Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication and assembly, using methods such as 3D printing, machining, and hand tools.
- Working knowledge of materials, tolerances, engineering drawings, and fabrication processes.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems, communicate design tradeoffs, collaborate across disciplines, and manage evolving priorities.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with cameras, imaging systems, medical devices, or precision optomechanical assemblies.
- Experience operating CNC or manual machining equipment and working with prototype fabrication vendors.
- Experience developing test fixtures, jigs, and assembly tools.
- Familiarity with ISO 13485, medical device design controls, and engineering documentation.
- Experience with thermal management, sealed enclosures, or cleaning and sterilization requirements.
Additional preferred qualifications for senior candidates
- Experience leading complex hardware development projects involving both mechanical and electrical components, including subsystem integration, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Project management experience, including developing schedules, defining milestones, managing dependencies and technical risks, and coordinating internal teams and external suppliers.
- Experience managing or mentoring engineers, assigning responsibilities, conducting design reviews, and guiding teams toward project goals.
- A demonstrated record of delivering integrated hardware systems from concept through working prototypes and, ideally, verification and manufacturing transfer.
Why join Cision Vision
Join a small engineering team where your designs can directly shape the product. You will work closely with company leadership, contribute to technical decisions, and see the hardware you build progress from early experiments toward clinical use. Experienced candidates will have opportunities to lead projects and help develop the engineering team.
How to apply
Apply through Indeed with your resume and a brief example of a prototype you personally designed and built. Describe the problem, your fabrication and testing approach, and how the design changed between iterations. Photos or a portfolio of nonconfidential work are welcome. Senior candidates are also encouraged to describe a complex project or engineering team they led.
Cision Vision is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and provide reasonable accommodations during the hiring process.
