Employment Type: Contract
Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design & Configuration Support Engineer to support mechanical engineering design reviews, product variant development, engineering change management, and configuration control.
The role involves reviewing mechanical designs and Bills of Materials (BoMs), conducting tolerance stack-up analysis, validating material selections, and supporting engineering changes across the product lifecycle. The successful candidate will work with CAD tools, SAP, Enovia 3DEXPERIENCE, and Meridian to maintain engineering data integrity and ensure compliance with technical requirements and configuration management processes.
The role will also involve supporting offshore engineering teams, contributing to safety and failure analysis, and preparing technical documentation for verification, validation, and testing activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design & Engineering
- Review mechanical designs, engineering drawings, and Bills of Materials (BoMs) for existing product variants.
- Apply mechanical engineering knowledge of aluminium machining, casting, and other manufacturing processes.
- Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to mechanical components, including elastomer gaskets.
- Generate, review, and modify mechanical and basic electrical engineering sketches and drawings using AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and SolidWorks.
- Apply Design for Excellence (DFx) principles and basic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques to improve product performance and manufacturability.
- Identify design weaknesses and recommend corrective actions through structured design reviews and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
- Materials & Manufacturing Engineering
- Review and validate material selections for mechanical components.
- Investigate material changes, supplier concessions, and manufacturing-related issues, preparing technical justifications for customer approval.
- Conduct fatigue, wear, and creep trade-off analyses.
- Investigate thermal, chemical, and process-related manufacturing issues.
- Understand destructive and non-destructive testing and inspection techniques.
- Contribute to Process FMEA (PFMEA), Value Stream Mapping, and Design of Experiments (DoE) activities.
- Configuration Management & Engineering Change Control
- Independently manage engineering baselines, configuration records, and engineering change workflows.
- Review, process, and support the approval of engineering changes, assessing their impact on product fit, form, function, and certification.
- Verify released engineering data, review change packages, and resolve configuration discrepancies with relevant stakeholders.
- Maintain configuration control of engineering drawings, BoMs, technical documents, and product data.
- Support engineering and SAP changes in coordination with the offshore LTTS team.
- Use SAP, Enovia 3DEXPERIENCE, and Meridian for configuration management and engineering change activities.
- Requirements, Safety & Technical Analysis
- Review Mechanical Requirements Documents (MRDs) and validate mechanical requirements against applicable standards.
- Assess the impact of Product Requests (PRs) and engineering changes on established requirements.
- Prepare procurement specifications and contribute to system-level mechanical requirements trade-off assessments.
- Develop mechanical development plans, structural safety analysis reports, and mechanical FMEA documentation.
- Contribute mechanical engineering inputs to system safety artefacts, including FHA, CCA, FMEA, FTA, and SEU, as applicable.
- Identify and mitigate mechanical design risks through structured engineering analysis.
- Assembly, Verification & Validation
- Assemble, inspect, and troubleshoot complex mechanical products.
- Apply structured problem-solving methods to investigate faults and improve design robustness.
- Review Mechanical Verification Test Plans (MVTPs) and Mechanical Verification Test Reports (MVTRs).
- Support verification and validation activities by reviewing test parameters and engineering predictions.
- Generate and maintain testing lifecycle documentation, including plans, procedures, test results, and verification records.
- Develop lifecycle documentation for test equipment and support the design and validation of new test equipment.
- Support practical engineering activities using laboratory equipment and technologies such as 3D printers.
- Documentation, Safety & Team Support
- Prepare, review, and update engineering drawings, specifications, test documents, and technical records.
- Support CAD tool usage, engineering drawing checks, and configuration management processes.
- Provide technical guidance and support to offshore engineering teams.
- Follow health and safety requirements when working in engineering offices, laboratories, and environments involving hazardous equipment or materials.
- Ensure the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and compliance with relevant engineering procedures.
Required Skills & Experience
- Mandatory valid security clearance appropriate to the assignment.
- Strong mechanical engineering knowledge, particularly in mechanical design, manufacturing, and product development.
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and SolidWorks.
- Expert working knowledge of SAP, Enovia 3DEXPERIENCE, and Meridian for engineering data and configuration management.
- Experience reviewing mechanical drawings, BoMs, and engineering change packages.
- Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and mechanical component design.
- Knowledge of aluminium machining, casting, material selection, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with FMEA, design risk assessment, and basic FEA.
- Understanding of configuration baselines, engineering change control, and product lifecycle documentation.
- Ability to prepare and review technical specifications, engineering reports, and verification documentation.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with customers, engineering teams, and offshore delivery teams.
Preferred Knowledge
- Design for Excellence (DFx), PFMEA, Design of Experiments (DoE), and Value Stream Mapping.
- Mechanical fatigue, wear, creep, and material performance analysis.
- System safety analysis and documentation, including FHA, CCA, FTA, FMEA, and SEU.
- Mechanical assembly, test equipment development, and verification and validation processes.
- Experience with manufacturing quality, inspection techniques, and engineering certification requirements.
