What they need

Mechanical Engineer - Defense / Aerospace / Oil & Gas Position Overview We are seeking a results-driven Mechanical Engineer to design, analyze, prototype and validate mechanical systems and components for projects in the defense, aerospace and oil & gas sectors. The role spans concept design through production support, with a strong focus on 3D CAD modeling, detailed drawings with GD&T, rapid prototyping and close collaboration with manufacturing and test teams to deliver safe, reliable and producible hardware.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead conceptual and detailed mechanical design using SolidWorks and AutoCAD to create 3D models, detailed drawings and fabrication packages.
  • Apply GD&T and ASME drawing practices to produce clear, inspectable engineering drawings and geometric tolerancing.
  • Build, iterate and evaluate physical prototypes (rapid prototyping, 3D printing, CNC parts) to validate fit, form and function; plan and execute hands-on prototyping activities.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers and quality teams to ensure designs are DFM/DFA compliant, generate and maintain BOMs, and support production ramp and troubleshooting.
  • Perform engineering analysis and hand calculations for stress, load, thermal and fluid considerations; coordinate finite element or CFD analyses with internal teams or external specialists as required.
  • Develop and execute test plans, support testing and validation (functional, environmental, vibration, thermal), collect and interpret test data and lead root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Manage engineering documentation, change control, configuration management and compliance with industry regulations and customer requirements.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams, contribute to schedule and cost estimates, and communicate technical status and risks to stakeholders.
  • Support supplier selection and evaluation, review vendor drawings and processes, and provide technical guidance during manufacturing and assembly.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, promote best practices in design, testing and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; Masters degree or relevant advanced certification is a plus.
  • 3+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience in defense, aerospace, oil & gas or similarly regulated industries (mid-level); senior candidates with 5+ years preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for part and assembly modeling, drawing creation and release.
  • Experience with prototyping (rapid prototyping, 3D printing, CNC machining) and hands-on build/test activities.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and tolerance analysis.
  • Proven mechanical engineering fundamentals: statics, dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, materials and stress analysis.
  • Experience producing BOMs, engineering change notices, and supporting manufacturing/assembly processes; familiarity with DFM/DFA principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation and communication skills; ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and manage priorities under schedule pressure.
  • Preferred / Nice-to-have: ANSYS, Abaqus, Catia, PTC Creo, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Fluent, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Stress Analysis, Materials Science, Tolerance Analysis, Rapid Prototyping, 3D Printing, CNC Machining, CAM, Sheet Metal Design, weldments, BOM Management, Product Development, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), MasterCAM, Root Cause Analysis, Testing and Validation, Metrology, Matlab/Simulink, Python, LabView, Pneumatics, DFMEA, Hydraulics, HVAC, Manufacturing Processes, Quality Control, Six Sigma, Project Management.
