What they need
SWORD Engineering Ltd is a family-run engineering company specialising in the design, manufacture, installation, servicing, repair and refurbishment of recycling and materials-handling equipment.
Working with some of the UK's largest waste management companies, as well as customers across the recycling, packaging, quarrying, logistics and local authority sectors, our work is varied and rarely repetitive.
Due to continued growth and an increasing order book, we are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer / Fitter to join our engineering team based in Wem, Shropshire.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced, hands-on engineer looking to be involved with machinery from manufacture and assembly in our workshop through to installation, commissioning, maintenance and breakdown support at customer sites.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
This is a hands-on position covering both workshop manufacture and site-based engineering, working on conveyors, trommels, balers and other heavy industrial machinery.
A key part of the role involves installing, dismantling, removing and relocating heavy plant and machinery at customer sites throughout the UK, so previous experience in this area is important.
Duties will include:
- Mechanical assembly and fitting of new machinery and equipment
- Installation, dismantling, removal and relocation of heavy industrial machinery
- Fitting and replacing bearings, shafts, rollers, gearboxes, motors, drives and seals
- Working confidently from engineering and assembly drawings
- Mechanical fault-finding, diagnosis and repair
- Machinery modifications, repairs and overhauls
- Planned and reactive maintenance at customer sites
- Working with hydraulic systems
- Machinery installation and commissioning
- Welding and fabrication where required
- Working safely around lifting operations involving cranes, telehandlers and MEWPs
This is not a repetitive production-line role. We're looking for an experienced engineer who can look at a machine, drawing or mechanical problem, understand what needs to be achieved and work through a practical solution.
THE CANDIDATE:
You should have:
- At least 5 years' relevant mechanical engineering/fitting experience
- Experience working with heavy industrial machinery, plant or manufacturing equipment
- Previous experience installing, dismantling and relocating heavy machinery
- Strong mechanical fitting and fault-finding skills
- Experience with bearings, gearboxes, motors, drives and hydraulic systems
- The ability to confidently read and work from engineering drawings
- A practical, hands-on approach and high standard of workmanship
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- A full UK driving licence
Experience with conveyors, trommels, balers or other recycling/materials-handling equipment would be a distinct advantage.
MIG/MMA welding, fabrication and electrical fault-finding experience would also be advantageous.
A recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship, City & Guilds, BTEC/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent is desirable.
IPAF, forklift, telehandler and Slinger/Signaller qualifications would be advantageous, although additional training can be provided.
The role includes UK-wide site work, so applicants must be prepared to work away from home and occasional weekends when required.
HOURS & BENEFITS: 30 days annual leave inclusive of statutory holidays, increasing to 30 days after 12 months service, pension scheme.
Our motto: We all work hard at SWORD Engineering, we all play hard!
If you have the necessary skills, a great work ethic and are looking for a new challenge we would love to hear from you.
