Position Overview

We are seeking a technically credible, hands-on Mechanical Engineering Manager to lead our mechanical engineering function within a 70-person engineering organization. Overseeing a highly capable team of 5 to 6 engineers primarily based in Salt Lake City.

This is a stable leadership position designed for a seasoned professional who thrives on balancing technical mentorship with strategic business support.

The ideal candidate will provide strong technical oversight, troubleshoot directly alongside engineers, and manage administrative workflows.

Core Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership & Mentorship
• Provide practical technical guidance, troubleshooting support, and direct mentorship to a smart, highly valued engineering team.

Proposal & Work Estimation:

• Lead proposal development, accurately estimate project efforts and timelines, and perform comprehensive cost and pricing analyses.

Client & Project Management Interface:

• Act as a key technical point of contact for clients and internal project managers, actively participating in field and project discussions.

Business Development Support:

• Identify opportunities during client interactions to capture additional business and foster long-term commercial relationships.

Key Qualifications & Requirements:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar
• Professional Engineer (PE) License: A current PE license is strongly preferred.
• Willingness to obtain additional state licenses to support diverse regional projects is a plus.
• Strong, current mechanical engineering expertise.
• Candidates must be able to solve technical problems rather and act as a people manager.

Leadership Experience:

• Prior department or people management experience is highly preferred.
• Senior Project Engineers or Project Managers with exceptional technical depth and the interpersonal maturity to step into department leadership will also be considered.

Proposal Experience:

• Proven track record of bringing technical proposals to successful completion, including defining scope, scheduling, and commercial pricing.

Management Style:

• Approachable, calm, supportive, and collaborative.
• Must possess a relationship-based leadership style that builds trust.

Location & Travel Logistics:

• While Houston, TX is the preferred strategic location to maximize client interaction, field activity, and local business growth, Salt Lake City, UT is a highly viable option as the mechanical engineering team is primarily situated there. If based in Houston, the manager must be willing to travel to Salt Lake City at least once every 4 to 6 weeks (with more frequent travel expected during onboarding) to maintain accessible, hands-on contact with the engineering team.
