Mechanical Engineering Specialist — Gas Separation & Supersonic Flow Design

Oak Ridge, TN | On-site | Full-time

U.S. citizenship and DOE Q-clearance eligibility required

About LIS Technologies Inc.

LIS Technologies Inc. (LIST) is commercializing CRISLA, a patented laser enrichment process for uranium enrichment, stable and medical isotope production, and advanced materials manufacturing. Our Oak Ridge team is developing next-generation gas separation and isotope enrichment systems built on decades of laser physics and mechanical design innovation.

Role Summary

Design and integrate mechanical, optomechanical, and gas flow systems supporting CRISLA gas-phase separation technology. This role requires learning quickly, developing mechanical concepts, building 3D CAD models, performing CFD analysis, specifying materials, and leading fabrication and assembly from prototype through production in collaboration with laser, process, and manufacturing teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop gas separation assemblies and flow manifolds for isotope enrichment systems.
  • Integrate custom designs and commercial equipment into complete, functional systems.
  • Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings.
  • Specify materials, tolerances, and sealing solutions for high-vacuum and corrosive environments.
  • Coordinate with vendors on machining and precision component assembly.
  • Lead design reviews, prototype builds, and iterations with cross-functional teams.
  • Support experimental test setups, assembly, and mechanical integration in laboratory environments.
  • Prepare engineering reports, specifications, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of mechanical design and engineering experience, ideally with high-vacuum or gas-dynamic systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent 3D CAD software.
  • Experience with machined components, GD&T, and design for manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and integrating complete assemblies.
  • Excellent written communication and technical documentation skills.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in precision nozzle, separator, or related high-velocity flow hardware design.
  • Experience with supersonic or molecular beam systems, vacuum manifolds, or separator jets supported by CFD analysis.
  • Experience designing mechanisms, dynamic seals, and optomechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of gas transport phenomena, thermal gradients, and flow-stabilizing design.
  • Familiarity with laser interaction hardware, precision optical alignment, and cryogenic or heated assemblies.
  • Experience in fast-paced R&D environments and managing prototype-to-production transitions.
  • Exposure to nuclear, aerospace, or semiconductor hardware environments.

Security & Work Authorization

U.S. citizenship is required under applicable 10 CFR Part 810 and/or export control requirements (ITAR/EAR). Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-clearance.

Working Conditions

  • On-site in Oak Ridge, TN, Monday–Friday, with occasional overtime to meet deliverables.
  • Field work may require standing, walking, climbing stairs or ladders, wearing PPE, and occasionally lifting approximately 30–50 lbs.
  • Periodic off-hours support for emergencies, outages, audits, or commissioning.
  • Limited travel (<10–15%) to vendor, regulatory, or partner sites.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary starting at $150,000+, commensurate with experience.
  • Medical, dental, vision, 401(k), disability, and life insurance.
  • Paid time off, paid holidays, and professional development support.
  • Relocation assistance available.
