Mechanical Estimator / Contracts Engineer – Precision Machining - Aerospace & Medical

Shamrock Industries Limited – Sydenham, Christchurch
Full time • $45–$55 per hour

Help quote and deliver complex, precision‑machined projects across aerospace and medical sectors.

We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Estimator / Contracts Engineer to join Shamrock Industries, a specialist precision machining and contract manufacturing business based in Sydenham.

Internally we call this role a Customer Service Engineer (C.S.E.) – you’ll be the key link between our customers and our factory team, turning enquiries into accurate quotes and delivering jobs “in full, on time, in specification”.

You must have full New Zealand working rights for this role.

About the role

You’ll take ownership of customer jobs from first enquiry through to invoicing, including:

  1. Customer Requirements & Estimating
  • Interpret Customer RFQ's, engineering drawings, specifications and 3D CAD information to establish requirements and prepare accurate estimates and quotations.
  1. Job Definition & Production Planning
  • Translate Customer requirements and quotations into clearly defined manufacturing jobs, including job travellers, production information, materials and supporting documentation required for manufacture
  1. Materials & Supplier Coordination
  • Source and coordinate materials, components and subcontract services, managing supplier quotations, lead times and requirements to support production
  1. Production & Delivery
  • Monitor jobs through production, work with the factory team to resolve issues and coordinate priorities to ensure work is delivered in full, on time, in specification
  1. Quality, Documentation & Traceability
  • Work with the Quality Manager to ensure Customer quality requirements, drawings revisions, specifications and traceability requirements are correctly reflected in the job and check that inspection and supporting quality documentation is complete and in order before delivery
  1. Commercial Control, Job Analysis & Improvement
  • Work with the Finance & Administration Manager to review supplier invoices and issue accurate Customer invoices
  • Analyse completed jobs against estimates to understand variances and identify opportunities to improve future estimating and production
  1. Repeat Production - Aerospace & Medical
  • Contribute to the development of increasingly standardised, codified, repeatable and documented manufacturing processes - PPAP
  • Where components are manufactured for KAN/BAN stock, help manage finished-part inventory and coordinate replenishment to meet Customer requirements

You’ll work closely with fellow C.S.E.s, the Factory Team, Suppliers and Sub-Contractors in a collaborative SME environment.

About you

You’re a practical, technically minded and organised person who enjoys solving problems and dealing with Customers, Suppliers, Sub-Contractors and the Factory Team.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience in estimating, quoting, project coordination or a similar role within an engineering or manufacturing environment
  • A sound understanding of precision manufacturing processes, materials used and subcontract services
  • Confidence interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances/GD&T, surface finishes and 3D CAD information
  • Experience working in a quality-controlled or compliance-focused environment with an appreciation for codified documentation regime, revision control and traceability - PPAP
  • Experience using MRP/ERP systems and working with production information, experience with ECi-M1 would be advantageous
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills, including the ability to manage multiple jobs and use actual job performance to improve future work
  • Good communication skills and ability to build effective relationships with Customers, Suppliers and Internal Teams
  • Ability to juggle multiple jobs, prioritise effectively and maintain attention to detail under pressure
  • A practical and proactive approach with the ability to work effectively within a small, collaborative team dedicated to delighting its Clientele.
