  • A higher technical diploma or equivalent qualification in Mechanical or Marine Engineering is advantageous.

Professional Qualifications

  • Relevant mechanical trade certification is preferred. Training or certification in the following areas is advantageous:
  • Mechanical fitting and machinery installation
  • Equipment alignment
  • Lifting and rigging awareness
  • Permit-to-work systems
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
  • Confined-space entry
  • Working at height
  • Shipyard or industrial HSE
  • Basic supervisory or frontline leadership training

Experience

  • Typically 7–10 years of progressive mechanical experience, preferably within shipbuilding, ship repair, marine engineering, offshore, shipyard, heavy engineering, or industrial environments, including at least 2–3 years in a Foreman, Lead Mechanic, Chargehand, or comparable frontline supervisory role.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mechanical Work Planning & Daily Execution

  • Review daily and weekly mechanical work priorities with the Mechanical Supervisor, Superintendent, or responsible Engineer.
  • Translate approved work packages, drawings, job cards, and schedules into clear daily work assignments for mechanics, fitters, helpers, and assigned technicians.
  • Plan the sequence of mechanical activities considering work-front availability, manpower, materials, tools, access, equipment, and interface requirements.
  • Conduct pre-work briefings to ensure assigned personnel understand the scope, technical requirements, safety precautions, quality expectations, and required completion time.
  • Monitor daily execution and adjust manpower or work sequencing within assigned authority to maintain progress against the approved schedule.

Mechanical Installation, Assembly & Fitting Supervision

  • Supervise installation, positioning, assembly, fitting, levelling, and alignment of marine machinery and mechanical equipment onboard vessels.
  • Ensure pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, couplings, bearings, mechanical drives, and related equipment are installed in accordance with approved drawings and manufacturer requirements.
  • Verify that foundations, supports, mounting arrangements, clearances, connections, and equipment interfaces are ready before installation proceeds.
  • Monitor mechanical fitting and alignment activities and ensure applicable tolerances and installation requirements are achieved.
  • Coordinate mechanical interfaces with piping, electrical, fabrication, structural, and other trades to prevent clashes, rework, or installation delays.

Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul Supervision

  • Supervise dismantling, inspection, maintenance, repair, overhaul, reassembly, and servicing of assigned marine machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Ensure mechanical components are inspected for wear, damage, corrosion, leakage, misalignment, or other abnormal conditions during dismantling.
  • Coordinate replacement or repair of bearings, seals, gaskets, couplings, valves, fasteners, and other mechanical components as required.
  • Ensure repaired or overhauled equipment is correctly assembled, lubricated, aligned, tightened, and prepared for testing.
  • Report significant equipment defects, additional repair requirements, or conditions outside the approved work scope to the responsible Supervisor or Engineer.

Manpower, Tools, Materials & Work-Front Coordination

  • Allocate mechanics, fitters, helpers, and assigned technicians according to workload, competency, work priority, and project requirements.
  • Monitor workforce attendance, productivity, utilization, discipline, and compliance with assigned working hours.
  • Confirm the availability of materials, spare parts, consumables, tools, lifting equipment, access arrangements, and other resources before work commencement.
  • Coordinate material and spare-parts requirements with Stores, Procurement, Engineering, and the responsible Supervisor to minimize work interruptions.
  • Maintain appropriate control over tools and equipment issued to the mechanical team and report shortages, damage, or unserviceable items.

Quality Control, Inspection & Technical Compliance

  • Ensure mechanical work is executed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, equipment manuals, work instructions, and applicable quality requirements.
  • Conduct frontline inspections of completed mechanical work before presenting it for formal Quality/QC, Engineering, client, or other required inspection.
  • Verify mechanical alignment, clearances, fastening, lubrication, installation condition, and general workmanship before work is considered complete.
  • Coordinate rectification of punch-list items, inspection comments, defects, and non-conforming work within the assigned mechanical scope.
  • Prevent unauthorized technical deviations and refer drawing discrepancies, design conflicts, or technical uncertainties to the responsible Engineer or Supervisor.

Testing, Commissioning & Completion Support

  • Coordinate mechanical readiness checks before equipment testing, commissioning, or system start-up.
  • Verify that required mechanical installation, fastening, lubrication, alignment, guards, connections, and housekeeping activities are complete before testing.
  • Support Mechanical Engineers, Supervisors, Quality personnel, and commissioning teams during functional and operational testing.
  • Monitor machinery during testing for abnormal vibration, temperature, noise, leakage, movement, or other irregular operating conditions.
  • Coordinate approved rectification work arising from testing, commissioning, inspection, or punch-list activities and ensure timely close-out.

HSEQ, Team Supervision & Workplace Discipline

  • Conduct or participate in toolbox talks, task briefings, risk-control discussions, and other required pre-work safety activities.
  • Ensure assigned personnel comply with PPE, permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, lifting, working-at-height, confined-space, hot-work, and other applicable HSEQ requirements.
  • Stop or immediately escalate unsafe work practices, hazardous conditions, damaged equipment, or activities outside approved controls.
  • Maintain good housekeeping across mechanical work areas, workshops, onboard locations, and designated equipment areas.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching, and practical technical support to mechanics, fitters, helpers, and junior personnel while maintaining appropriate workplace discipline.
