Our Cookstown site is home to our dedicated sprouted seeds production. Because this is a high-care, high-risk facility where fresh sprouted seeds are grown and packed without a cooking or kill step, our engineering standards are central to food safety and operational integrity. We are building an agile, high-impact team where you will directly influence site performance, line reliability, and future plant automation.

1. Job Purpose

The Mechanical & Electrical Engineer takes hands-on ownership of all plant, equipment, and utility reliability within our high-risk sprouting and packing facility in Cookstown.

This role combines daily management and rapid fault-finding across our automated packing lines with an active role delivering site-wide automation projects—specifically the engineering and rollout of new automated washing, growing, and factory handling systems. Working in a tight-knit, growing team, you will ensure total machinery uptime, uphold uncompromising high-care hygiene standards, and help shape our automated production footprint.

2. Key Responsibilities

Automated Pack Line Reliability & Maintenance

• Deliver scheduled preventative maintenance (PPM) and dynamic fault-finding across the primary automated packing line, including multi-head weighers, flow wrappers, checkweighers, labellers, sealers, and pick-and-place robotics/conveyors.
• Provide rapid diagnosis and resolution of electro-mechanical breakdowns to minimise production interruptions and product giveaway.
• Troubleshoot electrical circuits, sensor arrays, motor drives (VSDs), pneumatic cylinders, valves, and PLC/HMI interface controls.

Automation Projects & Process Implementation

• Act as key technical support for the scoping, installation, and commissioning of site automation projects, focusing on new automated seed-washing systems and broader factory automation.
• Partner with equipment vendors, integration specialists, and internal stakeholders to integrate new automated cells into existing factory layouts.
• Drive continuous improvement (CI) initiatives on equipment performance, cycle times, water and energy efficiency, and operational flow.

High-Risk Food Safety & Engineering Hygiene

• Adhere strictly to the stringent hygiene and zoning protocols required of a high-risk / ready-to-eat (RTE) sprout manufacturing environment (no thermal kill step).
• Ensure all engineering modifications and maintenance routines comply fully with HACCP, BRCGS, and GMP standards—preventing biological, physical, or chemical cross-contamination.
• Apply strict tool control, swarf containment, line-clearance sign-offs, and deep post-maintenance sanitisation protocols.

Operations Collaboration & Growth

• Work hand-in-hand with small, versatile production teams, coaching packing line operators on autonomous maintenance, sensor cleaning, changeovers, and basic line troubleshooting.
• Maintain clean engineering documentation, update technical schematics, and manage critical spare parts inventories to keep the Cookstown plant agile and self-reliant.

3. Qualifications & Experience

• Education & Trade:
• Recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or equivalent (City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND, or time-served trade apprenticeship as an Electrician or Mechanical Fitter).
• Experience:
• 3+ years of hands-on multi-skilled engineering experience within a manufacturing facility—food, beverage, fresh produce, or pharmaceutical environments preferred.
• Demonstrable experience maintaining automated packaging machinery (weighing, sealing, conveying, labelling, sensor diagnostics).
• Direct involvement in automation, machinery integration, or capital installation projects (washing systems, automated conveying, or PLC/sensor integration).
• Understanding of high-risk, high-care, or cleanroom operating standards where microbiological integrity is critical.

4. Key Skills & Attributes

• Electro-Mechanical & Automation Competence: Solid understanding of automated machinery, 3-phase and single-phase electrical systems, pneumatics, servomotors, VSDs, industrial sensors, and relay logic.
• Hygienic Engineering Standards: Strong awareness that in a non-cooked sprout growing environment, hygienic design, moisture ingress protection (IP ratings), and spotless post-work cleanups are non-negotiable.
• Project & Implementation Mindset: Pragmatic, solution-oriented approach to bringing new equipment online while keeping daily packing operational.
• Adaptable & Collaborative: Self-directed, approachable communicator who enjoys the agility and autonomy of a tight-knit site.

5. Working Environment

• High-risk food manufacturing setting involving temperature-controlled, humid, and wet-wash production zones.
• Role involves physical dexterity, working around wash tanks and packaging machinery, and adhering to strict high-care PPE and gowning requirements.

Pay: £43,000.00-£45,500.00 per year
