What they need
Job Title: Mechatronics & Propulsion Calibration Engineer
Number of Positions: 2
Locations: Whitley, UK
Employment Type: 1-Year Fixed-Term Contract (FTC)
Right to Work: These positions are open to UK-based candidates who already have the unrestricted right to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship is not available for either role.
Role Overview
We are seeking two Calibration Engineers to support the development, calibration and validation of automotive control systems across internal combustion engine and gasoline propulsion applications.
The two positions will cover complementary areas of automotive calibration. One role will focus on mechatronics, actuators, sensors and network diagnostics , while the other will focus on propulsion systems, engine management, starting and aftertreatment technologies .
Working across desktop calibration, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL), simulation, rig and vehicle testing, you will help deliver robust, reliable and production-ready calibration solutions that meet performance, emissions, quality and programme delivery targets.
You will collaborate with Lead Engineers, Subject Matter Experts, Component Owners and multidisciplinary engineering teams to analyse test data, investigate technical issues, validate system functionality and deliver calibration improvements throughout the development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Calibration Development: Develop, optimise and validate ECU software calibration solutions for engine management, propulsion systems, mechatronic controls and associated electronic control functions.
- Mechatronics and Network Calibration: Calibrate and validate actuator and sensor controls, network management functions and diagnostics, including air-path actuators and sensors, emissions sensors, and CAN/LIN communications.
- Propulsion System Calibration: Develop and deliver calibration for starting, combustion, engine mode transition and aftertreatment functions, including Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF), Three-Way Catalytic Converters (TWCC) and catalyst heating strategies.
- Testing and Validation: Plan and conduct calibration and validation activities across desktop, HiL, simulation, rig, climatic chamber and vehicle test environments, as appropriate to the programme.
- Data Analysis and Problem Solving: Acquire and analyse engineering test data, identify root causes of technical issues and implement effective calibration improvements using structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Performance and Emissions Optimisation: Deliver calibration solutions that meet agreed functional performance, emissions, robustness, quality and programme timing requirements.
- Systems Integration: Work with software, systems, feature and component teams to define requirements, validate functionality and deliver agreed calibration work packages.
- Validation and Production Readiness: Support functional validation, robustness testing, regression testing, integration testing and production maturity activities to ensure reliable and production-ready calibration solutions.
- Technical Risk Management: Proactively identify, investigate and communicate technical risks, issues and dependencies, ensuring timely resolution and appropriate escalation.
- Engineering Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate engineering documentation, calibration records, test reports and technical findings, and present results through peer reviews and stakeholder updates.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Lead Engineers, Subject Matter Experts, Component Owners and wider project teams to achieve technical objectives and programme milestones.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Experience in automotive ECU calibration, software calibration, propulsion calibration, controls engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Understanding of engine management systems, electronic control systems, actuators, sensors and calibration methodologies.
- Practical experience in combustion and/or emissions testing.
- Experience with data acquisition, test systems, engineering data analysis and technical reporting.
- Proficiency in ETAS INCA, ETAS MDA, AVL CONCERTO or equivalent calibration and data analysis tools.
- Strong analytical skills and experience applying structured problem-solving and root-cause analysis techniques.
- Ability to interpret and produce engineering specifications, test procedures, calibration documentation and technical reports.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Full UK driving licence or equivalent.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience with HiL, vehicle testing, powertrain test beds, rig testing or climatic chamber testing.
- Knowledge of air-path controls, engine actuators, sensors, network management and CAN/LIN communications.
- Experience with starting systems, combustion calibration, emissions control, GPF, TWCC and catalyst heating strategies.
- Knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink, AVL CAMEO, Vector CANalyzer or engineering scripting tools.
- Knowledge of hybrid or electrified powertrain technologies.
- Experience with calibration optimisation, regression testing, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and systems integration testing.
- Understanding of calibration robustness, functional validation and production readiness processes.
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline.
- Six Sigma training or certification.
