What they need
Help design, build and test innovative sports technology hardware in a hands-on, multidisciplinary product development role.
The company
SpinPoint is an early-stage New Zealand sports technology company developing advanced measurement hardware for ball sports. We combine mechanical design, electronics, embedded software and computer vision to create accurate, accessible, leading-edge products.
The role
This is a varied, hands-on engineering position involving mechanical design, electronics, prototype development, testing and problem-solving.
A significant part of the role involves using Fusion 360 to design mechanical components, precision jigs, fixtures, calibration equipment and test apparatus. You'll take designs from initial concept through to fabrication, assembly and validation.
You'll also work with electronics, embedded systems and software as part of the development and testing of our products.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing mechanical parts, assemblies, jigs and fixtures using Fusion 360.
- Developing and building prototype and test equipment, including precision calibration and measurement systems.
- Producing manufacturing drawings and specifications, including appropriate dimensions and tolerances.
- 3D printing, machining, assembling and modifying prototype components.
- Assembling, testing and troubleshooting electronic and mechanical systems.
- Developing and improving experimental test procedures and equipment.
- Supporting embedded hardware, firmware and Python-based test and automation systems.
- Investigating engineering problems, implementing solutions and validating performance.
- Contributing to product design improvements and preparation for manufacturing.
You'll have considerable scope to take ownership of engineering tasks, develop practical solutions and see your designs built and put to use.
About you
We're looking for a mechatronics, mechanical, electronics or similarly qualified engineer with at least three years of relevant industry experience.
Strong practical engineering ability is particularly important. You'll enjoy taking ideas from initial design through to working prototypes, with a practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving.
Essential skills and experience:
- Strong proficiency in Fusion 360, particularly parametric part and assembly design.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building mechanical components, jigs, fixtures or prototype equipment.
- Good understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, tolerances and manufacturing processes.
- Practical experience with 3D printing, machining or other prototyping techniques.
- Competence in electronics assembly, testing and fault-finding.
- Ability to independently approach engineering problems and develop workable solutions.
- Good communication skills
- Full drivers license
Desirable skills and experience:
- Python programming, particularly for test automation or hardware interfacing.
- Embedded systems development using C and microcontrollers such as ESP32.
- Experience with sensors, cameras, optics or precision measurement systems.
- PCB design and electronic circuit development.
We don't expect applicants to be experts in every discipline. Strong mechanical CAD and hands-on engineering skills are essential, along with the aptitude and willingness to work across mechanical, electronics and software development.
What we offer
- A competitive salary of $90,000–$102,000, depending on experience.
- The opportunity to make a significant contribution to the development of an innovative New Zealand technology product.
- A practical, varied role with substantial responsibility and ownership of engineering projects.
- Direct involvement in the complete product development process, from concept and prototyping through to testing and production.
- A full-time position based at our Gracefield, Lower Hutt premises, with an initial 90-day trial period
- Potential participation in ESOP
- Start date from 4th November 2026
How to apply
Please submit:
- Your CV, outlining your relevant engineering experience.
- A brief introduction explaining your interest in the position.
- Examples of relevant practical projects or products you've worked on, particularly mechanical CAD designs, jigs, fixtures, prototypes or electronic systems.
- Your availability to start.
Applicants must have the legal right to work in New Zealand.
