Medical Coder

Key Responsibilities

• Review medical records, clinical documentation, and physician notes to identify diagnoses, procedures, and services provided to patients
• Assign appropriate diagnostic, procedural, and healthcare codes using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
• Verify that coded data is accurate, complete, and compliant with coding guidelines and regulatory standards
• Ensure timely submission of coded records to billing and claims departments to support revenue cycle management
• Maintain detailed records of coding activities and audit trails for quality assurance purposes
• Communicate with clinical and billing staff to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies
• Stay current with coding updates, regulatory changes, and industry best practices
• Identify and report potential coding errors or compliance issues to supervisors
• Contribute to departmental quality improvement initiatives and coding accuracy metrics

What we're looking for

• Professional Medical Coding Certification (RHIT, RHIA, CCS, or equivalent recognized credential)
• Proficiency in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
• Excellent attention to detail with the ability to work accurately under pressure
• Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and medical coding software
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
• Knowledge of healthcare compliance regulations, including HIPAA and billing guidelines
• At least 2 years of DRGV coding experience, or 3–5 years of Inpatient (IP) coding experience
