DIRECTOR OF MERCHANDISING

Location: New York

Salary: $160,000 – $180,000 + Comprehensive Benefits

Nter Talent is supporting a leading online grocery innovator with the appointment of a Director of Merchandising Meat, Poultry & Seafood.

This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced grocery, eCommerce, or food retail professional to take ownership of Category Management, Merchandising, and Pricing across the department. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing strategic category plans, driving commercial performance, strengthening vendor partnerships, and leading a high-performing team of category experts.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong track record within grocery merchandising, particularly across perishable categories, alongside experience in product sourcing, eCommerce strategy, pricing, and grocery supply chain.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Own Category Management, Merchandising, and Pricing for the Meat, Poultry, Seafood, and Deli department.

• Develop and execute strategic category plans designed to grow sales, optimize assortment, improve space utilization, and balance pricing with efficient product flow.

• Continuously evaluate financial and operational performance against departmental goals and drive corrective action where required.

• Build, lead, coach, and develop a team of Category Managers, creating a culture of accountability, achievement, collaboration, and customer-centric excellence.

• Hold vendors accountable to agreed performance metrics, including sales, service levels, funding, marketing, and compliance.

• Assess supplier capability and viability while developing strategic vendor partnerships that unlock synergies, maximize resources, and support mutual growth.

• Oversee daily and weekly department operations, ensuring work is completed accurately, efficiently, and on time.

• Partner cross-functionally with suppliers and internal teams to strengthen supply chain, procurement, replenishment, and inventory strategies across the business.

• Respond quickly and effectively to food safety issues while implementing preventative measures to protect quality and customer experience.

• Partner with Operations to drive continuous improvement and implement methods that elevate product quality, customer perception, and the overall customer experience.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• 8–10+ years of experience within Grocery Retail, eCommerce, Food Retail, or a related industry.

• Experience within Perishable departments is strongly preferred.

• Proven success across merchandising, category management, product sourcing, pricing, and/or grocery supply chain.

• Strong commercial and analytical mindset, with the ability to interpret financial and operational performance and turn insights into actionable category strategies.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present recommendations effectively.

• Strong organizational and project management skills, with experience managing mid-sized projects from strategy through to execution.

• Demonstrated success building, developing, and leading high-performing teams.

• Strong executive presence with the ability to influence senior leadership and translate complex category strategies into compelling, actionable recommendations.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

• A genuine passion for food, grocery, and delivering an exceptional customer experience.
