About Marais

Marais Consultants is a woman-owned civil and structural engineering firm founded in New Orleans in 2022 by Jennifer Snape, PE. We provide thoughtful, practical design solutions for municipal, federal, institutional, commercial, and private clients throughout the Gulf Coast region.

Our work includes structural design, historic preservation and adaptive reuse, civil site design, structural inspections, and community outreach. Our structural projects range from new residential and commercial construction to renovations of schools, community facilities, historic buildings, and complex existing structures.

Marais was founded on the belief that strong communication and close coordination lead to better projects—and a more enjoyable design process. We value responsiveness, technical excellence, constructability, and collaboration. We also look for meaningful ways to improve the sustainability and resilience of every project, from efficient structural systems and material reuse to designs that respond to the Gulf Coast’s changing climate.

As a growing firm, Marais gives engineers the opportunity to take ownership of their work, contribute to the direction of the company, and collaborate directly with clients, architects, contractors, and other design professionals. We also believe excellent work should be compatible with a fulfilling life outside the office, which is reflected in our flexible work week, benefits, and PTO policies.

The Opportunity

Marais is seeking a Mid-Level Structural Engineer to join our New Orleans structural team. This position is ideal for a licensed engineer who is ready to manage projects with increasing independence while continuing to grow alongside experienced structural engineers. The successful candidate will manage and support new construction, renovation, rehabilitation, and historic preservation projects from initial assessment through construction.

  • Analyze and design steel, concrete, masonry, and wood structural systems
  • Evaluate existing and historic structures and develop practical repair, stabilization, and adaptive reuse solutions
  • Prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and cost estimates
  • Manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Coordinate with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and public agencies
  • Conduct field investigations, structural assessments, and construction observations
  • Review submittals, shop drawings, and requests for information
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers
  • Participate in quality-control reviews, proposals, interviews, and business development

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Approximately 5–10 years of structural engineering experience
  • Active Professional Engineer license, preferably in Louisiana, or ability to obtain Louisiana licensure through comity
  • Experience producing structural calculations and construction documents
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and client-service skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work both independently and collaboratively
  • Authorization to work full-time in the United States without sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with renovations, existing buildings, or historic structures
  • Experience designing with steel, concrete, masonry, and wood
  • Familiarity with applicable building codes and Gulf Coast wind-design requirements
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and drafting or BIM software
  • Construction administration and field-assessment experience
  • Interest in mentoring staff and helping grow a structural practice

Benefits

  • Competitive Salary

  • Unlimited PTO Policy with minimum of 3 weeks per year

  • Historic, centrally-located office (2200 Prytania St.)

  • Half-day and remote Fridays

  • 401(k) with matching, 100% vested

  • Health, Vision, Dental, Short Term Disability, and Life Insurance

  • Paid Family Leave

  • Educational Assistance Program

  • Memberships for Professional Organizations
