Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and dependable freelance Millwork Installer to install custom and commercial millwork, cabinetry, fixtures, and architectural woodwork on a project-by-project basis. The majority of our work is in the retail industry, including retail store build-outs, store fixtures, display units, cash wraps, custom cabinetry, wall panels, shelving, and other specialty millwork. The majority of our work takes place in Manhattan, but we do have jobs in Brooklyn as well as out of state.
The ideal candidate has experience working in retail environments, can read and interpret shop drawings, and is capable of completing installations with precision, efficiency, and attention to detail. The installer must be comfortable working on active construction sites, coordinating with project managers and other trades, and meeting project schedules and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Install custom retail millwork, store fixtures, display cases, shelving, cash wraps, cabinetry, wall panels, countertops, moldings, and other architectural woodwork.
- Perform installations primarily in retail stores, shopping centers, commercial spaces, and retail construction or renovation projects.
- Read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, elevations, and installation details.
- Measure, lay out, level, plumb, scribe, cut, fit, and secure millwork accurately.
- Verify site conditions and dimensions before beginning installation.
- Make field adjustments and modifications as necessary to ensure proper fit, alignment, and finished appearance.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and installation equipment.
- Work efficiently within retail construction timelines, including overnight or off-hours installations when required.
- Protect finished materials, store fixtures, merchandise, and surrounding surfaces during installation.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site.
- Complete punch-list items, final adjustments, and installation corrections as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Proven experience in millwork installation, finish carpentry, retail fixture installation, cabinetry, or a related construction trade.
- Previous experience with retail store installations is strongly preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, elevations, and construction documents.
- Proficiency in measuring, layout, leveling, and precision installation techniques.
- Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, fasteners, adhesives, and installation hardware.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
- Ability to troubleshoot field conditions and resolve installation challenges independently.
- Reliable transportation and appropriate tools for assigned projects.
- Flexibility to travel to project sites and work evenings, overnight shifts, or weekends when project requirements demand.
- Ability to meet deadlines and comply with job-site safety requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience installing retail store fixtures, cash wraps, display units, shelving systems, and custom cabinetry.
- Familiarity with retail store build-outs, renovations, rollouts, and fixture replacements.
- Experience working from approved shop drawings and coordinating field dimensions.
- Experience working in shopping malls, shopping centers, department stores, and other retail environments.
Work Arrangement
- Freelance, project-based engagement.
- Assignments offered according to project availability, location, and experience.
- Compensation agreed upon per project, day rate, or hourly rate, as specified in the project agreement.
- Installer is responsible for providing agreed-upon tools, equipment, and transportation unless otherwise arranged.
- Project scope, schedule, completion deadlines, travel requirements, and payment terms will be established before each assignment.
