What they need
About Atlantic Carbon Group
We mine and process ultra-high-grade anthracite from open-pit operations in the Northeast Pennsylvania coalfield. Customers worldwide use our anthracite to make lower-emission steel from recycled scrap, filter water (including PFAS removal), and refine zinc.
The Role
The Mine Engineer is our engineering department’s eyes on the ground. You’ll turn the mine plan into the bench layouts, haul roads, and blast patterns our crews work from. You’ll survey and fly pits by drone to confirm what’s built matches the plan, measure our coal stockpiles, and monitor pit water and highwall conditions daily. You’ll work side by side with pit supervisors and field crews.
This is an entry-level role, and we’re glad to train a new graduate. If you want a first job in the field rather than behind a desk, where your work shows up in the pit the next day, this is it.
What You’ll Do
Pit design and surveying
- Turn long-range mine sequences into short-range bench advancement plans, haul road alignments, and ramp designs for field crews
- Survey active pits every day, by ground survey and by drone, compare actual elevations against the plan, and flag deviations right away
- Give pit supervisors updated staking lines, verify bench floors, and communicate current extraction boundaries
Drill and blast
- Calculate burden, spacing, and hole depth for upcoming shots, and draft blast patterns suited to the rock strata to get good fragmentation
Drone stockpile and volume reporting
- Serve as the site’s primary FAA Part 107 drone pilot. If you don’t have your Part 107 certificate yet, we’ll help you prepare for and schedule the exam, and you’ll be expected to earn it within 90 days of hiring.
- Process drone survey data to calculate the volume and true tonnage of coal in our stockpiles
- Feed verified inventory numbers straight into production reporting, and give Finance accurate volumes and stripping ratios for cost-per-ton tracking
- Decide when to get ground or reroute a flight because of weather, low visibility, or field safety risks (that call is yours)
Highwall and ground conditions
- Use survey and drone data to watch high walls, crests, and catch benches for early signs of ground movement
- Map soft ground, pooling water, and low-wall seepage that could put equipment or haul trucks at risk
Daily pit water checks
- Check water gauges, sump levels, and catchment areas on every active pit floor
- Log water depths change so management can see each morning whether pit water is rising or falling
- Inspect dewatering pumps, line pressures, and intakes on your rounds, and flag blockages or capacity problems immediately
Compliance and teamwork
- Work with our Head of Compliance to keep drone flights, blast designs, and slope profiles within FAA and MSHA regulations
- Work with engineering leadership to finalize multi-week extraction sequences, haul road changes, and highwall safety boundaries
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, or in Civil, Geological, or Geotechnical Engineering, or Surveying. Recent graduates and December 2026 or spring 2027 graduates are welcome.
- FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, or willingness to earn it within 90 days of hire with company support
- Comfortable with engineering calculations and Excel; some exposure to AutoCAD or mine design or survey software
- Willing to work outdoors every day, in all weather, on active open pit mine sites
- Valid driver’s license
- A safety-first mindset and clear communication with field crews
Nice to Have
- Internship or co-op at a mine, quarry, or heavy civil construction site
- RTK GPS or total station surveying experience
- Drone mapping software (Propeller, Pix4D, DroneDeploy, or similar) or mine design software (Carlson, Deswik, Vulcan, or similar)
- Coursework in blast design, slope stability, or hydrology
- FE exam passed (EIT)
- Prior MSHA training (not required; we provide MSHA Part 48 training)
What We Offer
- Competitive salary
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k); paid time off and holidays
- Hands-on training and mentorship from an experienced engineering and operations team
- Support for FE/PE licensing and professional development
- A stable company in the heart of Pennsylvania’s anthracite region
