Location: Aston, Birmingham
Salary: £27,000 - £31,000 per annum
Job type: Full-time, Permanent
Working hours: Monday to Friday, 7:45am – 3:00pm

About the role

Newbury Independent School is looking for a reliable, responsible and caring Minibus Driver to join our team and help ensure the safe and comfortable transport of our students to and from school.

This is an important role within our school community. You will be responsible for transporting students safely, maintaining a professional and reassuring presence, and helping create a positive start and end to their school day.

Our students may have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, so we are looking for someone who is patient, understanding and confident in supporting young people with a range of individual needs.

If you are a safe and conscientious driver who enjoys working with young people and wants to make a difference, we would love to hear from you.

Key responsibilities

  • Safely transport students in the school minibus in accordance with planned routes and schedules.
  • Ensure students are collected and dropped off at the correct locations and at the agreed times.
  • Maintain a calm, professional and supportive environment throughout every journey.
  • Promote appropriate behaviour and ensure students follow vehicle safety procedures.
  • Carry out daily vehicle safety checks and report any defects, damage or maintenance requirements promptly.
  • Keep the minibus clean, tidy and in a roadworthy condition.
  • Ensure all passengers wear seat belts and comply with relevant safety requirements.
  • Follow school procedures for student collection, handover and drop-off.
  • Communicate effectively with school staff, parents and carers where required.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns, incidents, accidents or behavioural issues promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to journeys, vehicle checks and incidents as required.
  • Follow all school policies, road traffic regulations and health and safety procedures.

About you

We are looking for someone who is dependable, approachable and committed to the safety and wellbeing of our students.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A full, valid driving licence appropriate for the vehicle being driven.
  • A safe and responsible approach to driving.
  • Excellent punctuality, reliability and timekeeping.
  • A calm, patient and understanding manner when working with young people.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to manage challenging situations professionally.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • The ability to follow instructions, school procedures and planned transport schedules.
  • A flexible and team-focused approach.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience driving a minibus or transporting passengers.
  • Experience working with children or young people, particularly those with SEND or SEMH needs.
  • Relevant minibus driver training or MIDAS training.
  • First aid training.

Applicants must meet the applicable driving licence, insurance and legal requirements for the vehicle and role.

Working hours

  • Days: Monday to Friday
  • Working window: 7:45am – 3:00pm
  • Shift length: Approximately 6 hours per day, as scheduled
  • No weekend working expected, unless otherwise agreed.

Please note that the daily working window is 7 hours and 15 minutes. The advert describes the role as approximately six working hours per day; the exact working pattern and any unpaid breaks will be confirmed at interview.

Safeguarding and safer recruitment

Newbury Independent School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of all children and young people.

The successful candidate will be required to complete the school's safer recruitment process and appropriate pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check and relevant driving licence checks.

We are looking for someone who takes their responsibility for student safety seriously and understands the importance of maintaining professional boundaries and reporting safeguarding concerns.
