ABOUT US
Gloster Engineering is a Hamilton-based precision engineering company with a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and technical excellence. We manufacture and supply precision-engineered components to a range of industries across New Zealand — dairy, food and beverage, animal health, marine, automotive, gas, and medical — operating from our modern Frankton facility with a skilled team of tradespeople who take real pride in their work.
We are well invested in plant and people, and we keep our machines busy. This is a genuine opportunity to join a stable, well-run business at the right time.
THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced CNC machinist to coordinate our Miyano cell — eight bar-fed machines that form one of the busiest lanes in the workshop. Most of them are mill-turn centres, not plain lathes.
This is a step up from a straight operator role. You will run your own work, but you will also coordinate the cell: sequencing jobs across the eight machines, grouping work to minimise bar and tooling changeovers, making sure nothing stands idle waiting on material or a program, and feeding capacity and at-risk jobs back to the Factory Foreman early enough to be acted on. You will guide the other machinists working in the cell, though they do not report to you.
If you have only ever run conventional turning, the machines are worth understanding. They carry driven tooling in the turret and a programmable C-axis on the spindle, so milling, cross-drilling, flats, keyways, hexes and off-centre features are cut in the same setup as the turned form. Two are twin-spindle machines that pass the part to a sub-spindle and finish it complete — done in one.
Every machine in the cell is bar fed, and that matters. Bar work is a skill in its own right — diameter and length changeovers, pusher and guide-channel selection, feed alignment and support, remnant management, and the discipline to set a job so it runs reliably with reduced attendance and stops rather than making scrap when something goes wrong. If you have run bar-fed mill-turn work, you will be right at home here.
You do not need to be a full offline programmer — but you do need to be confident editing at the machine and setting your own work. If you are a strong bar-fed turner who has not yet worked with driven tooling, we will train you into it.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate the day-to-day running of the Miyano cell — sequencing jobs across eight machines to the production plan and priority list
Keep the cell fed: tooling, bar stock, bar feeders and programs ready before a machine runs out of work
Report cell capacity, progress and at-risk jobs to the Factory Foreman early
Set up, prove out, and operate the Miyano mill-turn centres
Set up and change over the bar feeders, and prove jobs to run reliably with reduced attendance
Sequence turning and driven-tool operations, so parts come off the machine complete wherever the machine allows
Edit CNC programs at the control — offsets, feeds and speeds, tool paths, C-axis positioning, bar pull and part-off, and sub-spindle transfer
Conduct first-off inspection and in-process quality checks against engineering drawings
Guide and support other machinists working in the cell
Complete daily machine and bar feeder checks, and keep coolant within the specified concentration band
Identify and drive improvements in set-up methods, tooling selection, bar utilisation and cycle times
Work safely and contribute to a tidy, well-organised workshop
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
- A relevant trade qualification — Fitter/Turner, Machinist, or equivalent — or demonstrated equivalent experience
Proven CNC turning experience with the ability to set jobs independently from engineering drawings
Bar feed experience — setting, changing over, and running bar-fed work reliably
Mill-turn experience — driven tooling and C-axis work — or the capability and appetite to be trained into it
The organisational ability and confidence to coordinate work across several machines and guide peers, without formal authority over them
Confidence editing programs and offsets at the control — Fanuc or similar
Experience working to tight tolerances in a precision engineering environment
Sound use of precision measuring equipment — micrometers, bore gauges, thread gauges
Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving
A genuine commitment to quality and getting it right first time
An advantage, but not essential:
Direct experience on Miyano BNC or BNA mill-turn centres, or comparable Japanese turn-mill machines
Magazine bar feeder experience, and lights-out or reduced-attendance running
C axis milling or sub-spindle / done-in-one experience
Previous cell leader, lead hand, or coordinator experience in a machine shop
Experience in a job shop producing low-volume, high-variety work
NON-NEGOTIABLE REQUIREMENTS
The following are essential — applications not meeting these criteria will not be progressed:
Legal right to work in New Zealand — no exceptions
Trade qualification or demonstrated equivalent experience in CNC machining
Minimum 3 years' practical CNC turning or mill-turn experience, including setting your own work
Demonstrated experience running bar-fed work
Willingness to undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
Must be available for a face-to-face interview and practical skills assessment in Hamilton
WHAT WE OFFER
- A coordination role with genuine ownership of a cell — not just a machine
A well-invested, fully bar-fed mill-turn cell and consistent, interesting work
Real mill-turn capability to develop on, including Y-axis and twin-spindle machines
Competitive hourly rate reflecting your skill and experience, reviewed annually
Day shift, Monday to Friday — no night work
A stable, privately owned Hamilton engineering business with more than 25 years behind it
A team that values craft, quality, and getting on with the job
Genuine opportunity to grow with the business as we invest and expand
