Mobile Crane Systems Field Mechanic

A day in the life

You start with a stack of work orders and a yard full of iron—mobile cranes, boom trucks, trailers, pickups, and semis. You prioritize preventive work, diagnose the tough ones, and bring equipment back to spec. You’ll split your time between inspections, hands-on wrenching, and testing so every lift is safe and every machine performs to OEM standards.

What you’ll take on

• Perform scheduled and corrective service on diesel powertrains, booms, hydraulics, electrical circuits, braking systems, and other core components.
• Use hoists, forklifts, and hand trucks to safely dismantle, handle, and reassemble heavy assemblies.
• Conduct end-to-end machine evaluations to pinpoint defects, faults, or malfunctions and decide on the right repair path.
• Function-test equipment after repairs or assembly to verify performance and compliance with manufacturer and OEM specifications.
• Handle routine care: cleaning, lubrication, and standard service on vehicles and equipment.
• Interpret operating manuals, schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings to guide repairs and installs.
• Fabricate, modify, and fit special equipment or replacement parts using the proper specialty tooling.
• Inspect components for wear or damage with precision tools such as micrometers and gauges.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and rewire electrical systems and harnesses.
• Replace damaged or worn parts on cranes and related fleet equipment.
• Support additional tasks as operational needs evolve.

Education

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Associate or vocational degree preferred.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Experience

• 5+ years of mechanical experience with a strong, crane-focused background (required).
• 3+ years working on diesel, gasoline, and propane engines.

Core strengths

• Expert-level blueprint and instruction interpretation.
• Exceptional mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
• Advanced time management and clear communication skills.

Communication and documentation

You read and follow complex instructions, write simple correspondence, and explain findings one-on-one or in small team settings.

Physical demands

This role is active: frequent walking; fine and whole-hand work; kneeling, crouching, crawling; speaking and hearing; pushing/pulling; reaching; climbing; and bending/stooping. You may occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs. Visual needs include close, color, and peripheral vision, plus depth perception.

Work environment

Expect regular exposure to outdoor weather and frequent proximity to moving mechanical parts while performing essential duties.
