What they need

Multi-Skilled Builder

Hawkins Builders Sheffield
Location: Sheffield & surrounding areas
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Experience: 6+ years post-apprenticeship
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience

About Hawkins Builders

Hawkins Builders is a Sheffield-based construction company delivering high-quality construction, refurbishment, renovation and maintenance projects across Sheffield and the surrounding area.

We take pride in doing things properly. From the quality of our workmanship to the way we communicate with clients and work as a team, we aim to deliver projects to a consistently high standard.

As our workload continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced Multi-Skilled Builder to join our team.

This is an opportunity for a skilled and versatile tradesperson who enjoys varied construction work and takes genuine pride in the finished product.

About the Role

As a Multi-Skilled Builder, you will work across a variety of residential and commercial construction and refurbishment projects.

You will have carpentry and joinery as a strong core skill, together with the ability to turn your hand to a range of other building trades.

No two projects will necessarily be the same. You could be carrying out first-fix carpentry on one project, installing doors and timber work on another, before moving on to plastering, masonry, roofing, decorating or general building works.

We are looking for someone who is confident working independently, can solve problems on site and understands what is required to deliver a quality job from start to finish in a timely manner.

What You'll Be Doing

Your day-to-day work may include:

  • Carrying out general building, construction, refurbishment and renovation works.
  • Undertaking high-quality carpentry and joinery works.
  • Fabricating and installing timber structures, frames, doors, flooring, skirting, architraves and bespoke joinery.
  • Installing and altering doors, frames, kitchens and other internal fixtures.
  • Reading and working from drawings, measurements and specifications.
  • Carrying out first and second-fix carpentry.
  • Undertaking plastering and plasterboard works, including patch repairs.
  • Carrying out brickwork, blockwork, stonework and general masonry repairs.
  • Undertaking painting, decorating and finishing works.
  • Carrying out flooring, tiling and associated finishing works where required.
  • Undertaking minor plumbing works within your level of competence.
  • Carrying out roofing repairs and associated building works where experienced and appropriately trained.
  • Assisting with other trades and specialist contractors as part of a wider project team.
  • Using hand tools, power tools and construction equipment safely and effectively.
  • Measuring, cutting, shaping and installing materials accurately.
  • Identifying problems and finding practical solutions on site.
  • Working efficiently to agreed programmes and project deadlines.
  • Maintaining a clean, tidy and safe working environment.
  • Protecting customers' properties and treating every site with care and respect.
  • Communicating effectively with colleagues, clients, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Taking responsibility for the quality of your own work from start to completion.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a genuinely multi-skilled tradesperson, not simply someone who has experience of a number of different jobs.

You should be able to demonstrate:

  • At least 6 years' experience post-apprenticeship.
  • A strong background in carpentry, joinery or general building.
  • Proven experience working across multiple construction trades.
  • The ability to work confidently from drawings, specifications and measurements.
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Competence with a wide range of hand and power tools.
  • The ability to work independently and use your own initiative.
  • The ability to work as part of a team and alongside other trades.
  • A good understanding of construction methods and materials.
  • A strong understanding of health and safety on construction sites.
  • A professional approach when working in customers' homes and occupied properties.
  • A commitment to delivering a high standard of workmanship.
  • A reliable and positive attitude.
  • Ability to mentor and train junior colleagues.
  • Ability to lead a small team.
  • Managing a team and delegate tasks accordingly to meet a required deadline.

Your Trade Skills

We would particularly like to hear from candidates with experience in several of the following:

  • Carpentry & joinery
  • General building
  • First and second fix
  • Plastering & plasterboarding
  • Brickwork & blockwork
  • Stonework & masonry
  • Roofing
  • Painting & decorating
  • Flooring & tiling
  • Kitchen installation
  • Door & window installation
  • Bespoke timber fabrication
  • Refurbishment and renovation
  • General property improvement

You do not need to be formally qualified in every trade.

What matters to us is that you have a strong primary trade skill and genuine practical experience across other areas of construction.

Where specialist certification or qualifications are required, you must understand the limits of your competence and work alongside appropriately qualified tradespeople.

The Person

The successful candidate will be someone who:

  • Takes real pride in their work.
  • Cares about the finished result.
  • Doesn't cut corners.
  • Can look at a problem and work out how to solve it.
  • Is comfortable taking responsibility for their own work.
  • Can work without constant supervision.
  • Can supervise and lead others.
  • Is willing to help other members of the team.
  • Takes care when working in clients' properties.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally.
  • Is reliable, punctual and hardworking.
  • Understands that a good job is about more than just the work itself.
  • Leaves a site clean, safe and well presented.
  • Wants to build a long-term career with a growing construction company.

Qualifications & Additional Skills

Essential:

  • 5+ years' post-apprenticeship experience.
  • Strong carpentry/joinery or general building background.
  • Demonstrable multi-skilled construction experience.
  • Competent use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lead projects.
  • Good knowledge of construction practices.
  • Good understanding of health and safety.
  • High standard of workmanship.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable:

  • NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent trade qualification.
  • CSCS card.
  • Additional trade qualifications.
  • Experience working on refurbishment and renovation projects.
  • Experience working on residential and/or commercial projects.
  • IPAF, PASMA or other relevant site qualifications.
