What they need

Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer

CanDo Laundry Services is looking for an experienced, hands-on Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer to support our busy commercial laundry operations across our two South Wales facilities in Port Talbot and Kenfig. This is a full-time, permanent role involving planned preventative maintenance, fault-finding and repairs across industrial laundry machinery and associated plant. The successful candidate will work at either site according to operational requirements, helping to reduce production downtime and maintain high standards of safety and compliance. We welcome applicants with strong skills across several engineering disciplines, particularly commercial gas or electrical maintenance.

Job Description

Job Title: Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer

Location: Port Talbot and Kenfig, South Wales (work across both facilities)

Salary: £33,000 starting salary, with further progression

Hours: Full-time

Contract: Permanent

Reports To: General Manager

Remote Working: No remote work available

Role Purpose

Maintain safe, compliant and reliable operation of gas-fired dryers, steam boilers, washer-extractors, flatwork ironers, folders, conveyors and compressed-air systems across the company’s Port Talbot and Kenfig facilities. The engineer will carry out planned preventative maintenance, rapid fault-finding, repairs and continuous improvement at either site as required by operational needs. We do not expect one engineer to hold every specialist qualification; the successful candidate will bring proven strengths in multiple relevant areas and work within their competence and authorisations.

Key Responsibilities

Planned Preventative Maintenance

· Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on laundry machinery, plant and buildings.

· Inspect equipment to identify wear, defects and potential failures before breakdowns occur.

· Schedule maintenance around production requirements to minimise disruption.

Breakdowns, Repairs and Installation

· Respond promptly to breakdowns, diagnose faults and minimise production downtime.

· Undertake mechanical, electrical, gas, steam, plumbing or fabrication repairs only where suitably qualified and authorised.

· Assist with machinery installation and commissioning, and coordinate specialist support when needed.

Compliance and Health & Safety

· Support safe and timely inspections of gas, electrical, steam/pressure and water systems.

· Follow safe isolation, lock-out/tag-out, hot-work and permit-to-work procedures.

· Complete risk assessments and method statements; report hazards, near misses and incidents promptly.

· Ensure specialist work is performed only by appropriately qualified and authorised persons.

Records and Continuous Improvement

· Maintain accurate maintenance, repair, parts, boiler and testing records.

· Investigate repeat faults, identify root causes and implement lasting solutions.

· Identify opportunities to reduce energy, gas and water use and improve equipment reliability.

· Source spare parts and liaise with contractors, suppliers and other engineering colleagues.

· Participate in a shared on-call rota and develop skills through training and knowledge sharing.

Person Specification

Essential

· Recognised qualifications in at least two priority technical areas (for example, gas and plumbing or electrical and mechanical).

· Proven maintenance engineering experience in an industrial, manufacturing or production environment.

· Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.

· Sound knowledge of safe isolation and workplace health and safety requirements.

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with clear communication and accurate record keeping.

· Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

· Commercial Gas Safe registration.

· Electrical NVQ Level 3 and 17th/18th Edition qualification.

· Experience with steam boilers, pressure systems and commercial laundry machinery.

· Plumbing NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent; welding and fabrication skills.

· PLC, inverter, control panel, sensor or automation experience.

· Experience with pneumatics, compressed air, water hygiene, chemical dosing, PAT testing or EICR support.

· IPAF, forklift, confined-space or IOSH certification.

Technical Skills and Experience

Relevant expertise may include commercial gas systems; electrical maintenance; bearings, belts, chains, gearboxes, pumps, drives and conveyors; steam boilers, traps, valves, condensate return, blowdown and water treatment; water supply, drainage and hot water systems; MIG/TIG/arc welding; laundry equipment; PLCs and safety interlocks; compressors and pneumatic components; PSSR requirements; Legionella checks; chemical dosing; and electrical testing and inspection support.

Skills and Behaviours

· Safety-conscious, dependable and proactive.

· Calm and methodical under production pressure.

· Practical, hands-on approach to maintenance and improvement.

· Willingness to learn new equipment and broaden technical qualifications.

What We Offer

· £33,000 starting salary with progression and regular reviews linked to performance and new qualifications.

· Funded training and opportunities to gain additional qualifications.

· Workplace pension and free on-site parking.

· Employee of the Month recognition and incentives.

· Opportunity to help shape a developing maintenance function.

Working Arrangements

This is a fully site-based position. The engineer must be willing and able to work at either the Port Talbot facility (Unit 2, Addison Road, Port Talbot, SA12 6HZ) or the Kenfig facility (Unit 4, Kenfig Industrial Estate, Port Talbot, SA13), as scheduled to meet operational requirements. No remote work is available.

Pay: £33,000.00 per year

Application question(s):

  • Do you have previous experience working as a Maintenance Engineer in an industrial, manufacturing or production environment?
