Municipal Internship Program
The Town of East Longmeadow Municipal Internship Program is a structured, project-based initiative designed to provide meaningful educational experiences for high school and college students while advancing practical projects that benefit the Town.
The program operates annually and hosts one intern at a time, allowing for individualized attention, intentional project development, and controlled impact on departmental workloads. Internship length and scheduling are flexible and aligned with academic requirements, ensuring accessibility for both high school and college students.
A key feature of the program is its project-based model. Each intern is assigned a defined project that is realistic in scope, achievable within the internship period, and directly beneficial to the Town. Projects are developed after the intern is selected and may involve collaboration with multiple departments to provide broad exposure while limiting the burden on any single department.
The Town will alternate, to the extent possible, between high school and college interns with each placement, based on the applicant pool. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, with a new selection process opening toward the end of the current internship to ensure continuity.
Central coordination by a designated office ensures consistent oversight, scheduling, and communication, allowing departments to participate in a structured and predictable manner. The program supports workforce development, strengthens community partnerships, and helps build a future pipeline of municipal talent, while delivering tangible value to the Town of East Longmeadow.
Eligibility This is an unpaid internship and only candidates who will receive academic credit will be eligible, proof of such credit will be required from your academic program. The Program Shall Be Open To:
- High school students with a demonstrated interest in municipal government or public service
- College students who are enrolled in, or pursuing, academic programs relevant to municipal government or specific municipal functions
Applicants Must Demonstrate:
- Interest in public service or municipal operations
- Ability to meet scheduling and participation requirements
- Professional conduct and communication skills appropriate to a municipal workplace
Applicants must complete the general employment application and submit both a current resume and a cover letter expressing their interest, experience, current or future studies, and any internship requirements relevant to their schooling and this position. Application process for this round will be open until a successful candidate is selected and the process will reopen towards the end of that internship to solicit applications for the next round. Any questions regarding this program may be directed to the Director of Human Resources, Audra Graham, via email at [email protected].
The Town of East Longmeadow is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer dedicated to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace. Qualified applicants of all backgrounds including women, people of color, LBGTQIA+ individuals, veterans, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. We are committed to fair hiring practices and a supportive, welcoming culture that offers equal career development and promotional opportunities to all employees. Job Details
