The Director of Nephrology will play a key role in clinical leadership, program development, physician collaboration, and the continued expansion of nephrology services throughout the region.
Position Overview
The Director of Nephrology provides clinical leadership and strategic oversight of nephrology services, ensuring evidence-based care, high clinical standards, and effective coordination across the continuum of kidney care. This individual will work closely with nephrologists, advanced practice providers, dialysis teams, facility leadership, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes, strengthen clinical operations, and support the growth of Synergy’s Kidney Health division.
Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership and oversight for nephrology services across assigned post-acute, skilled nursing, long-term care, and outpatient settings.
- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical protocols, practice standards, and evidence-based nephrology care initiatives.
- Oversee the evaluation and management of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), electrolyte disorders, hypertension, and related renal conditions.
- Support the delivery and coordination of dialysis care, fluid and volume management, medication optimization, and management of complex renal conditions.
- Recruit, mentor, and support nephrologists and advanced practice providers while promoting clinical excellence and professional development.
- Establish collaborative relationships with dialysis organizations, nursing facility administrators, primary care providers, hospitalists, and other specialty teams.
- Monitor clinical quality indicators, patient outcomes, care transitions, and adherence to applicable clinical and regulatory standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve care coordination, reduce avoidable hospitalizations, enhance documentation quality, and improve operational efficiency.
- Participate in strategic planning, service-line expansion, physician engagement, and development of new nephrology programs across Maryland and Virginia.
- Provide clinical consultation and guidance for complex cases and support consistent, high-quality nephrology care across practice locations.
- Ensure appropriate clinical documentation, compliance with applicable healthcare regulations, and adherence to organizational policies.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on service-line performance, staffing needs, resource allocation, and long-term program development.
Qualifications
- MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
- Active, unrestricted medical license in Virginia; additional Maryland licensure preferred or required based on service coverage.
- Board certification in Nephrology, preferably through the American Board of Internal Medicine.
- Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship.
- Demonstrated clinical expertise in CKD, AKI, ESRD, dialysis management, hypertension, electrolyte disorders, and complex renal disease.
- Prior physician leadership, medical directorship, service-line management, or clinical program development experience preferred.
- Experience in post-acute care, skilled nursing facilities, long-term care, outpatient nephrology, or dialysis services preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, clinical decision-making, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
- Experience with quality improvement, clinical performance monitoring, regulatory compliance, and practice development.
- Commitment to evidence-based medicine, patient-centered care, and continuous clinical improvement.
Compensation and Schedule
- Independent contractor or other mutually agreed-upon engagement structure, depending on the scope of responsibilities.
- Competitive compensation commensurate with clinical leadership responsibilities, experience, and service-line oversight.
- Flexible scheduling with a combination of clinical responsibilities, provider collaboration, and administrative leadership.
- Opportunity to shape and expand a growing nephrology service line across Northern Virginia.
