From state politics and rapid growth to the Texas Longhorns, technology, severe weather and the issues affecting Central Texas communities, Austin offers no shortage of impactful stories.
We’re looking for someone who knows how to build sources, generate strong story ideas and react decisively when news breaks. This position plays a critical role in shaping our daily coverage, coordinating crews and making smart logistical decisions to put our journalists where the story is happening.
The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and creative problem-solver who can manage multiple priorities, anticipate coverage needs and remain calm under pressure. You should be curious, competitive and constantly looking beyond the obvious story to find what matters most to our audience.
Skills and Experience:
- Assign and track news crews throughout the day
- Identify, develop and help advance compelling daily and enterprise content
- Coordinate crews strategically during breaking news and major events
- Monitor social media, incoming calls, emails and other sources for developing news
- Write and post timely, accurate content to the station website and social media platforms
- Develop and maintain contacts and sources that can lead to exclusive and enterprise stories
- Listen for, verify and respond quickly to breaking news
- Communicate clearly with reporters, photographers, producers and newsroom leadership
- Anticipate logistical challenges and help solve problems quickly in the field and newsroom
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Experience in an assignment editor role or another relevant newsroom position preferred
- Strong commitment to journalistic ethics, accuracy and fairness
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Strong news judgment and an interest in local, state, national and world news
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Proficiency with social media platforms and digital newsgathering
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field preferred
