What they need
NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS — JOIN OUR STRENGTHENING BOARD
Sober Bootcamp UK CIC | Leicester | Voluntary Position
Sober Bootcamp UK CIC is strengthening its Board and we're looking for exceptional people who want to help us challenge the way long-term recovery support is delivered.
This isn't an organisation that was created from a business plan alone.
It was created through lived experience.
WHY I FOUNDED SOBER BOOTCAMP
I'm Mason Ross, Founder of Sober Bootcamp UK CIC.
For around 12 years of my life, drugs and alcohol were part of my story. At my worst, I was using approximately 2g of cocaine a day alongside alcohol.
Behind the addiction was trauma, including losing my father to suicide when I was young and being the victim of a serious sexual assault as a teenager.
Eventually, addiction wasn't about having fun anymore. It was about surviving how I felt.
Recovery changed my life — but it also showed me something I believe is missing from too many services.
Helping somebody stop using drugs or alcohol is incredibly important. But what happens afterwards?
Where do they go at 7pm when they're lonely?
Who helps them rebuild their physical health?
Who teaches them how to eat properly or cook?
Where do they make new sober friendships?
How do they rebuild confidence and routine?
Who helps them deal with the trauma underneath their addiction?
How do they get qualifications, develop new skills and eventually return to employment?
And perhaps most importantly:
How do we help somebody build a life they don't constantly want to escape from?
That gap is why we're building Sober Bootcamp.
OUR VISION
We're developing a Recovery & Wellness Centre in Leicester designed around the whole person rather than addiction alone.
Sober Bootcamp will bring together:
- Structured fitness and physical wellbeing
- Therapy and trauma-informed support
- Nutrition education and practical cooking skills
- Peer support and genuine sober friendships
- Structured weekly routines
- Saturday activities and sober social opportunities
- Our Recovery Passport, helping members recognise and measure their progress
- Education, qualifications and employment pathways
- Skills workshops and opportunities with local businesses
- Rehab aftercare and community reintegration
- Support pathways for people experiencing homelessness and complex needs
- Youth prevention and education programmes
- Wider community initiatives designed to reduce isolation
We want someone entering Sober Bootcamp to be able to move from:
Crisis → Recovery → Stability → Confidence → Skills → Purpose → Independence.
We're not seeking to replace NHS services, drug and alcohol treatment providers, mental-health professionals or other specialist organisations.
We want to help bridge the gaps between them.
Our ambition is to work collaboratively with professional services while providing the structure, community, routine and progression that can help people continue rebuilding their lives outside appointments.
AND OUR AMBITION DOESN'T END IN LEICESTER
Leicester is where we want to prove the model.
If we can demonstrate meaningful outcomes, build strong partnerships and create a financially sustainable service, our longer-term ambition is to take the Sober Bootcamp model into other communities.
But growth must be responsible.
That's exactly why we're strengthening our Board now.
OUR BOARD
We're already building a multidisciplinary leadership and governance team around Sober Bootcamp, bringing together people with different professional backgrounds, perspectives and lived experiences.
We don't want a Board that simply agrees with the Founder.
We want people prepared to challenge us, question decisions, identify risks, strengthen governance and make the organisation better.
We're particularly interested in speaking with people who have senior experience in:
- NHS / healthcare / Public Health
- Addiction and recovery services
- Mental health and clinical governance
- Safeguarding
- Local government and commissioning
- Finance and accountancy
- Legal, CIC or charity governance
- Fundraising and philanthropy
- Property and estates
- Employment, education and skills
- Business and social enterprise
- Corporate partnerships
- Marketing, communications and PR
- Technology and digital transformation
- Scaling organisations
You don't need experience across all of these areas.
We're building a Board where different people bring different strengths.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We're looking for people who understand that good intentions aren't enough when you're supporting vulnerable people.
We need NEDs who can provide strategic oversight, scrutinise our plans, challenge assumptions, strengthen governance and help ensure that Sober Bootcamp develops safely, ethically and sustainably.
We're equally interested in people who understand the realities faced by those experiencing addiction, trauma, homelessness, poor mental health and social isolation.
Professional expertise matters.
But so does humanity.
THE POSITION
This is currently a voluntary Non-Executive Director position, and we want to be completely transparent about that.
We're still at an early stage of development.
That also means successful NEDs have an opportunity to join us at a particularly important point — helping shape the organisation rather than joining once everything has already been decided.
You'll have the opportunity to influence our strategy, governance, partnerships, service development and long-term growth.
A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO RECOVERY
Sober Bootcamp isn't based on the belief that there's one perfect route to recovery.
It's based on something much simpler:
People need reasons to stay well.
A healthier body.
Someone to talk to.
Somewhere to belong.
Friends who understand.
Structure when life feels chaotic.
Skills they didn't know they had.
A qualification.
A job opportunity.
Purpose.
And eventually, a future they're excited about.
That's what we're trying to build.
If you have the experience to help us do it properly, we'd love to hear from you.
Please introduce yourself, tell us what you believe you could bring to our Board and send your CV to:
