About Health in the Hood

Health in the Hood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2013 to create sustainable and equal food access for all. We grow fresh vegetables in urban gardens in Miami-Dade neighborhoods and give that produce away in the same places it was grown, alongside monthly food distributions and wellness education across nutrition, fitness, and gardening.

In 2025, we distributed more than 137,000 pounds of food to 2,258 households across 63 distribution events, and ran 77 wellness classes for 969 participants. 984 volunteers gave 3,326 hours.

We are growing. Food distribution is expanding into Broward County, we are installing a new school garden, and a user-choice pantry storefront is in development. The Program Director turns those plans into working programs.

Job Overview:

The Program Director oversees day-to-day operations across all three programs and is accountable for the performance of each. The Program Director is the connection point between the Co-Executive Directors, the program team, community partners, and volunteers.

The Program Director directs volunteer engagement with support from the program team, and holds the corporate relationships directly, from hosting a group on site to growing it into sponsorship and financial support.

We are seeking an experienced manager who has led programs in community-based settings and supervised staff directly, and who is as comfortable in a garden as in a planning meeting. This role calls for someone who can move between a garden team, a corporate volunteer group, and a funder conversation in the same day, and who can think a program through end to end and create the procedures and documentation that keep it running consistently.

Health in the Hood is a small team, so the Program Director builds the systems our programs run on and works inside them, on site with the team on distribution and harvest days rather than managing from a distance.

Essential Functions

The Program Director is accountable for the areas below. Much of this work is carried out by program staff, contractors, and volunteers. The Program Director sets the standard, assigns and sequences the work, supervises the people doing it, and owns the result.

Program operations

  • Direct the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all Health in the Hood programs, maintaining consistent quality and attention across all three program pillars.
  • Lead the garden team and the garden calendar across all sites, including day-to-day operations at our main gardens (currently Pinewood and Opa-locka), seasonal planting and harvest plans aligned to South Florida growing conditions and to what distributions need, scheduled oversight at partner gardens such as schools and shelters, new garden installs, and volunteer garden projects.
  • Oversee large- and small-scale distribution events (currently neighborhood food distributions, weekly harvest days, and annual holiday pantries) and the food sourcing behind them, including supplier relationships, ordering and pickups, and compliance with food bank and partner requirements for agreements, reporting, site standards, and staff trainings and certifications.
  • Set the wellness education calendar across nutrition, fitness, and gardening education, recruit and manage contracted educators, keep all three areas active, coordinate delivery at partner sites such as schools, libraries, shelters, and community centers as well as at the gardens, and maintain consistency, quality, and fit for each audience.
  • Establish and maintain standard operating procedures across all program sites, covering setup and breakdown, registration, participant flow, volunteer deployment, materials and supplies, and site condition, keeping every site ready for a donor, funder, or partner visit without advance notice.

Team, systems, and documentation

  • Supervise the program team, including performance expectations, regular one-on-ones, the weekly program team meeting, and workload and staffing allocation across sites, and advise the Co-Executive Directors on capacity needs.
  • Manage onboarding, training, and professional development for program staff, contractors, and interns, including intern agreements and required documentation.
  • Own Asana as the system of record for program tasks, events, and deadlines, and maintain organized SharePoint documentation covering site procedures, event plans, and intern files.
  • Partner with the Co-Executive Directors and development team on CRM implementation, maintain partner and relationship records in the CRM, and improve internal workflows as programs change, including evaluating and implementing new platforms for team, volunteer, and community use.
  • Oversee program communications and design, including event flyers and promotional materials, volunteer sign-ups, the website event calendar, and programmatic newsletter content, ensuring finished materials are ready for use.

Partnerships, community, and events

  • Set the strategy and standards for the volunteer program, including recruitment and retention in the neighborhoods Health in the Hood serves, the individual volunteer experience, and adequate volunteer coverage at every program event, and supervise the Program Coordinator, who manages day-to-day volunteer scheduling and onboarding.
  • Own relationships with major corporate and institutional partners, host these groups on site, and develop one-time volunteer groups into recurring commitments.
  • Grow corporate and institutional partnerships from volunteer engagement into lasting support. Identify which partners have capacity to give, deepen those relationships through on-site experiences, consistent follow-through, and visible impact, and work with the Co-Executive Directors to move them toward sponsorship, in-kind support, and financial giving.
  • Manage day-to-day program partnerships with host sites, churches, schools, libraries, shelters, and municipal partners, and bring in new program, educational, and institutional partnerships that expand program capacity.
  • Represent Health in the Hood at community meetings, partner convenings, and public events, building relationships that support both programs and development, and maintain a consistent presence with program participants, gathering stories and feedback with appropriate consent.
  • Lead 305 ThriveFest, our annual community event, from concept through execution, including directing logistics, partner and vendor coordination, volunteer staffing, programming, and donor and funder engagement. The event is in its early stages, and the Program Director will shape what it becomes.
  • Build and maintain a program and event calendar that keeps programs running consistently through the year, anticipating seasonal shifts such as summer weather and holiday pantry demand, and creating opportunities for volunteer recruitment, partner engagement, and donor and funder visits to program sites.

Data, reporting, and growth

  • Oversee program data collection across all sites, covering food distributed, households and individuals served, event and class counts, participants, and volunteer hours, maintain the pantry and volunteer platforms that hold it, and train staff and volunteers on accurate capture.
  • Set, track, and refine program goals and KPIs, and report performance to the Co-Executive Directors.
  • Provide program data and narrative content to the Co-Executive Directors for grant applications, funder reports, and board meetings.
  • Shape short- and long-term program strategy with the Co-Executive Directors, assessing new program opportunities and revenue potential and advising on feasibility, cost, and capacity.
  • Lead program expansion from planning through launch, including new distribution sites, school and community garden installations, and new service models, using repeatable processes for agreements, sourcing, staffing, and launch.

This description reflects the general nature and level of work expected of the Program Director. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties, and responsibilities may be adjusted as programs, team structure, and organizational needs evolve.

Qualifications

Required

  • Five or more years of program management experience in the nonprofit sector or similar, including at least two years directly supervising staff and/or contractors.
  • Demonstrated experience leading programs in the field, not solely from an office.
  • Demonstrated experience managing volunteers at scale, including corporate and group partnerships.
  • Experience building, implementing, and overseeing the systems behind programs: standard operating procedures, documentation, and workflows.
  • Experience producing finished program and event materials independently, from draft through final.
  • Experience planning and executing community or fundraising events, from logistics through day-of execution.
  • Experience owning program data and reporting to executive staff, funders, or a board.
  • Fluency with project management software, ideally Asana, and proficiency with Microsoft 365 including SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Experience growing corporate, civic, or institutional partnerships beyond a single engagement, including sponsorship, in-kind, or financial support.
  • Comfort using AI tools such as Claude in day-to-day work, including drafting, documentation, and research.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to move between a garden team, a corporate volunteer group, and a funder conversation.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and reliable vehicle.

Preferred

  • Spanish or Haitian Creole fluency.
  • Experience in food access, urban agriculture, or community health, with working knowledge of the South Florida nonprofit landscape.
  • Existing relationships in Miami-Dade or Broward community, corporate, or institutional networks.
  • Experience with CRM systems and with volunteer or pantry platforms such as POINT, PantrySoft, or Vivery.

Physical Requirements: Physically fit to handle the demands of the role, including lifting up to 25 lbs on occasion, as well as extended outdoor activities. Agility and quick decision-making are essential.

Equal Employment Opportunity: Health in the Hood is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, marital status, veteran status, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
