What they need

About The CEC

The CEC is an online tutoring directory connecting families with tutors for high-quality one-to-one tuition. We are currently expanding our team of online Science tutors working with pupils across the UK curriculum.

This is a flexible, self-employed opportunity. Tutors create their own CEC profile, set their own lesson rates and availability, and choose the subjects and levels they wish to offer. Parents can find tutors and book and pay for lessons through the CEC platform.

There is no monthly membership fee. The CEC retains 20% commission on lessons booked through the platform, and tutors keep 80%.

Who we are looking for

We are particularly interested in tutors with demonstrable experience of teaching or tutoring Science within the UK education system. This may include one or more of the following:

  • Primary Science
  • Key Stage 3 Science
  • GCSE Combined Science
  • GCSE Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics
  • IGCSE Combined Science
  • IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics
  • A Level Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics

Applicants should understand the curriculum and examination requirements for the subject or subjects and levels they intend to offer. Applicants do not need to teach all three sciences, but they should apply only for subjects and levels in which they have appropriate expertise.

We also welcome applications from UK-based Science graduates with strong subject knowledge who are earlier in their tutoring careers.

A relevant degree or postgraduate qualification alone is not sufficient for experienced-tutor applications; applicants must also be able to demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the UK curriculum and the subjects and levels they wish to teach.

The role

As a self-employed CEC Science tutor, you will:

  • deliver engaging, individualised one-to-one Science lessons online;
  • assess each pupil’s needs and adapt your teaching accordingly;
  • explain scientific concepts clearly, accurately and patiently;
  • help pupils develop their scientific knowledge, application, practical understanding and examination skills;
  • plan appropriate lessons and learning activities;
  • monitor pupil progress and provide appropriate feedback to pupils and parents;
  • create a professional, encouraging and supportive online learning environment;
  • manage your own availability and choose how many pupils you wish to tutor.

Essential requirements

Applicants must:

  • have suitable subject knowledge for every Science subject and level they intend to offer;
  • have relevant experience of the UK curriculum, unless applying as a UK-based Science graduate at the beginning of their tutoring career;
  • communicate clearly and professionally with children, young people and parents;
  • have reliable internet access, appropriate equipment and a suitable environment for delivering professional online tuition;
  • hold an appropriate DBS certificate or be willing to obtain one;
  • be able to complete Stripe Connect onboarding in a supported country, as all lesson payments and tutor payouts are managed through Stripe;
  • be willing to work on a self-employed basis and take responsibility for their own tax and other statutory obligations.

How the CEC works

  • You set your own lesson rates.
  • You choose your own availability.
  • You decide which Science subjects and curriculum levels you offer.
  • You choose how many pupils you take on.
  • You may choose whether to offer a free introductory taster session.
  • The CEC provides your parent-facing tutor profile and the booking and payment infrastructure.
  • There is no monthly membership fee.
  • The CEC retains 20% commission on completed lesson bookings, and you keep 80%.

The advertised £15–£70 hourly range represents illustrative potential earnings rather than a guaranteed wage. Tutors set their own lesson prices, and actual earnings depend on the rates they choose, completed bookings and the 20% CEC commission. The CEC does not guarantee a minimum number of pupils, lessons or working hours.

Applications

Please apply only if you have genuine expertise in the Science subject or subjects and levels you wish to tutor. As part of the application, you will be asked to describe your experience of teaching or tutoring the UK Science curriculum.

Suitable applicants will be invited to complete the CEC tutor onboarding and approval process before their profile becomes available to parents.

Pay: £15.00-£70.00 per hour

Expected hours: 1.0 – 20.0 per week

Benefits:

  • Flexitime
  • Work from home

Application question(s):

  • Which UK curriculum Science subjects and levels have you personally taught or tutored? Please describe your experience, including the subject or subjects, level(s), approximate length of experience and any relevant exam boards. If you are applying as a UK-based Science graduate who is earlier in your tutoring career, please state this and briefly summarise your relevant qualifications.
  • Which Science subjects and levels would you be confident and appropriately qualified to tutor through The CEC? Please list all that apply: Primary Science, KS3 Science, GCSE Combined Science, GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, GCSE Physics, IGCSE Combined Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry, IGCSE Physics, A Level Biology, A Level Chemistry and/or A Level Physics. Please select only subjects and levels for which you have strong subject knowledge and can plan and deliver effective one-to-one lessons.
  • Please confirm that you meet all three practical requirements for tutoring through The CEC: you hold an appropriate DBS certificate or are willing to obtain one; you can complete Stripe Connect onboarding in your country of residence; and you have reliable internet, suitable equipment and an appropriate environment for professional online tuition. If there is anything you are unsure about, please explain.
  • Choose one scientific concept from a subject and level you intend to offer and briefly explain how you would support a pupil who was struggling to understand it. Please include how you would identify the difficulty, explain or demonstrate the concept and check the pupil’s understanding.
