Open Pit Geologist

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Open Pit Geologist to work on a 6 month contract basis. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a mining contractor, Western Australia, where you will play a critical role in geological assessment, resource evaluation, and operational support for open pit mining activities. The position offers the chance to apply your geological expertise to work on small high grade gold projects

Key responsibilities

• Conduct geological mapping, sampling and analysis to support open pit mining operations and resource definition
• Prepare and maintain geological logs, reports and documentation in accordance with industry standards and client requirements
• Manage grade control and ore loss protocols to optimise extraction efficiency and minimise waste
• Provide daily geological guidance and support to mining operations, including pit face inspections and geological assessments
• Liaise with mine planning, production and engineering teams to ensure geological information is accurately incorporated into operational planning
• Assist in the development and refinement of pit designs and mine plans based on geological data and constraints
• Monitor geological conditions and provide early warning of potential geotechnical hazards or operational risks
• Maintain core and sample management systems and ensure quality assurance of geological data
• Support feasibility studies, exploration programmes and reserve estimation activities as required
• Comply with all health, safety, environmental and regulatory requirements applicable to mining operations

What we're looking for

• Tertiary qualification in Geology, Economic Geology, Mining Geology or related earth science discipline
• Minimum 3 years' experience as a geologist in open pit mining operations
• Strong knowledge of geological logging, core sampling and sample analysis techniques
• Proficiency in geological software and databases commonly used in mining, such as Gemcom, Datamine or equivalent mine planning software
• Sound understanding of ore deposit types, mineralisation patterns and grade control principles
• Experience in pit design, mine planning and resource estimation is highly desirable
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to present geological information clearly to operational and non-technical stakeholders
• Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail in data collection and analysis
• Demonstrated commitment to health and safety compliance in mining environments
• Current driver's licence and willingness to work in remote or regional mining locations
• Familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks and environmental legislation in Western Australian mining is preferred
