About Us IAG Defence & National Security (DNS) is part of IAG, a specialist advisory firm supporting complex infrastructure, Defence and national security programs across Australia. Our DNS team works closely with Commonwealth agencies and industry partners to deliver specialist expertise into nationally significant programs. Our success depends on our ability to identify, engage and mobilise highly specialised talent quickly and effectively. IAG is recognised as a Veteran Friendly Employer under the Veteran Employment Program.

The Role We're looking for an experienced Senior OpenShift Engineer to manage and optimise a government on-premises Red Hat OpenShift platform, meeting high standards of performance, security and compliance. You'll look after the monitoring, installation, configuration, administration, troubleshooting and maintenance of the clusters, and automate solutions so the platform stays stable and efficient.

You'll also lead cloud projects, mentor junior staff and work closely with developers, architects, security and infrastructure teams in a complex, dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer, configure and maintain on-premises Red Hat OpenShift platforms, keeping them available, stable and resilient
  • Run platform lifecycle activities, including cluster installation, upgrades, patching and technology refresh
  • Monitor platform health, capacity and performance, and troubleshoot complex OpenShift, Kubernetes and underlying infrastructure issues
  • Automate platform operations using Ansible, GitOps and Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Secure the platform through vulnerability scanning, network segmentation and role-based access control
  • Support developers with CI/CD pipelines for containerised applications
  • Lead technical delivery and mentor junior engineers

Required

  • 5+ years' systems administration experience, including OpenShift or Kubernetes cluster administration
  • Extensive Kubernetes administration experience, including networking, security, storage and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of OpenShift security and access management, including authentication, authorisation and RBAC
  • Experience with automation and DevOps practices, including GitOps, Ansible, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code
  • Working knowledge of the infrastructure supporting container platforms, including compute, networking, storage, load balancing, DNS, certificates and identity
  • Knowledge of Australian Government security frameworks, including the Essential Eight and the Information Security Manual (ISM), ideally from a government or regulated environment
  • Experience with enterprise change, incident, problem and configuration management
  • Degree in computer science, IT or software engineering highly regarded, or 5+ years in a large ICT environment plus 3+ years in a large Kubernetes environment
  • Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration, or equivalent, highly regarded

Engagement Details

  • Location: Canberra preferred, with Melbourne and Brisbane also considered
  • APS6 to EL1 equivalent
  • Hybrid work option may be available. Candidates must live within reasonable travel time of the office
  • Occasional out-of-hours support may be required, with on-call duties only in extenuating circumstances
  • Extension options available

What We Offer With offices in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, we're a tight-knit team working across some of Australia's most critical Defence and national security programs. We value expertise, collaboration and flexibility, providing our people with opportunities to contribute to meaningful and technically challenging projects.

We can offer great work, great people, great culture, great conditions, and an all-round great time whilst you continue building a rewarding career in the Defence and national security sector. As part of IAG, you'll be joining a team of more than 250 professionals.

Most opportunities advertised by IAG Defence & National Security are subject to client approval, security validation and contractual confirmation. Employment or engagement will only be offered following successful client acceptance and completion of all required pre-engagement checks and onboarding activities.

Please Note As this role may support a Defence program, a Defence employment moratorium period may apply to current or recently separated ADF/APS personnel seeking to move into industry roles. If you are currently serving or have recently left Defence, we'd recommend confirming your eligibility to apply before submitting.
