Operational Risk Manager, Commodities Trader

Overview

Our client are a World leading commodity trading and financing group, operating across metal, energy and agriculture markets.

In line with impressive business growth throughout 2026, they are now looking to appoint a new 2nd line operational risk manager to help oversee frameworks and controls across their physical metal trading activity. Working closely with group level counterparts, you will be expected to build relationships with front office risk and trading desks, specifically base and bulk metals as well as critical minerals.

This role will offer strong variety, working closely with Global teams in New York, Geneva, Dubai and Singapore.

Responsibilities

• Assessing new products and business initiatives in line with the group risk framework
• Supporting front office counterparts with physical risk controls. This could include warehousing risks, transportation risks, hedging provisions, inventory management, insurance (including incoterms) and working capital
• Keeping updated with geo-political events, wider supply risks (shipping lane closure), operational flows, freight prices
• Conducting Risk and Control Self Assessments with Group operational risk colleagues
• Providing KRIs, thematic reviews and assurance findings to management
• Challenging trading teams on control weaknesses - inventory reconciliation, warehouse concentration, warrant authenticity, assay levels, settlement schedules, collateral

Skills Required

• 6 - 10 years’ experience within an operational risk, operations or business management role within the base and bulk metal or critical minerals sector
• Experience within a commodity trading house, commodities focussed bank or mining group, handling LME or CME refined metal contracts - aluminium, copper (cathode), lead, zinc, critical minerals - lithium, cobalt or bulk metals - iron ore
• A demonstrable understanding of non-financial risks in a regulated business
