What they need

Work side by side with the owner of a growing family food and catering business, learn how the whole operation runs, and play a key part in keeping it running smoothly.

About us

We're a family-run food business in the GTA with retail and catering operations across two locations: Standard Sweets and Malton Sweets. We're growing, and we need someone sharp who can take things off the owner's plate and help us run smarter and grow faster.

Why this role matters

This is a key role in our business. The Operations Assistant works directly with the owner and supports the business in multiple ways to keep both locations running smoothly and help the company grow.

The role is hands-on and varied. Responsibilities span quality control, operations support, process documentation, catering coordination, hiring and training, and administrative work. Priorities can change from week to week, so flexibility is essential.

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, shows initiative, and is committed to the success of the business.

What you'll actually do

  • Shadow the owner. Sit in on decisions, vendor calls, and day-to-day problem solving. Act as his executive assistant: keep track of follow-ups, organize information, and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Run quality checks at both locations. Visit Standard Sweets and Malton Sweets regularly. Check food quality, cleanliness, and consistency, and report back on what's working and what isn't.
  • Support operations. Your job is to spot friction, help fix it, and keep things running smoothly between the owner and the team.
  • Document how we work. Many of our processes live in people's heads. You'll observe, ask questions, and write clear standard operating procedures (SOPs) the team can actually use.
  • Support the catering process. Be a point of contact for catering clients. Answer inquiries, take and confirm orders, and make sure each order is coordinated from first call to delivery.
  • Help hire and train staff. Post jobs, screen candidates, and help with interviews. Onboard new hires and train them on our standards and SOPs. Training is constant, should be overlooking employee roles on regular basis.
  • Handle admin work. Scheduling, paperwork, emails, tracking, and whatever else keeps the office side running.
  • Whatever comes up. New projects, one-off problems, research, errands. If it moves the business forward, it's on the table.

Who we're looking for

  • Resourceful. When you hit a wall, you find a way around it before asking for help. You don't need step-by-step instructions.
  • Smart and quick to learn. You pick up how things work fast and see how they could work better.
  • Hard working. You show up, follow through, and don't treat any task as beneath you. Some of this work is unglamorous, and you're fine with that.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity. Shifting priorities don't rattle you. You can juggle several things without dropping any.
  • Organized and clear. You take good notes, write clearly, and keep track of details.
  • Trustworthy. You'll see the inside of the business. Discretion matters.

Need to have: A valid driver's licence for travel between locations.

Nice to have: experience in food service, hospitality, or operations, your own car.

This probably isn't for you if...

  • You want a fixed job description and the same tasks every day.
  • You're looking for a management title right away.
  • You need detailed instructions before starting something.
  • You'd rather not get your hands dirty when things get busy.

What you get out of it

  • Direct mentorship. You'll learn how a business is actually run, straight from the owner, not from three layers of management.
  • A seat close to the decisions. You'll see how the business really works and have a say in how it improves.
  • Real responsibility, fast. Your work will be visible and it will matter.
  • Room to grow. As the business grows, so can you. This could become an operations, management, or chief-of-staff role for the right person.
