What they need

Operations Manager — GreaseGiant · Beltsville, MD · Full time, in person

About GreaseGiant

GreaseGiant collects used cooking oil from restaurants across DC, Maryland and Virginia. We run on a truck fleet, a sales team, and software we built ourselves for booking, routing and dispatch. We are hiring an Operations Manager in Beltsville.

The role

The Operations Manager runs the field team and the sales team, is the point of contact for our partners' sales teams, handles the admin that keeps a trucking operation legal and insured, and hires as we add trucks.

What you'll own

  • Field operations. The drivers, the daily routes, the trucks (fuel, maintenance, DOT paperwork), container placements, and anything that goes wrong at a restaurant during a pickup. When a driver is out, you run the route.
  • The sales team. Our cold callers and canvassers. You hire them, train them, set their targets, keep the CRM honest, and fix what is not converting.
  • Partners. You are the day-to-day contact for the sales teams at our distribution partners: joint accounts, handoffs, their reps' questions, their restaurants' problems.
  • Customers. A restaurant that signed last week and has a problem today calls you, and you make it right.
  • Admin. Insurance, permits, vendors, invoices, payroll inputs, compliance filings. The things that have to happen on time, happen on time.
  • Hiring. As trucks get added you hire the drivers and callers for them, and you build the onboarding so the fifth hire is easier than the first.

What a normal week looks like

  • Monday. Check the week's routes against bookings, confirm drivers, fix the gaps. Sit with the callers, look at last week's bookings and no-shows, decide what changes.
  • Tuesday. Ride along or run a route yourself. Note what is slow, what the driver is working around, which containers are wrong.
  • Wednesday. Insurance renewal paperwork. Chase a county permit. Onboard a new restaurant and get its container placed. Interview a driver candidate.
  • Thursday. A call with a partner's sales rep about three new accounts they want to hand us. Walk the yard with a driver and fix what he has been working around.
  • Friday. Close the week's numbers. Fix the thing nobody planned for.

Every week has at least one thing nobody planned for. Handling that well is most of the job.

Who you are

  • You have managed people. A restaurant GM, a warehouse or route supervisor, a field-service or crew lead, a platoon sergeant. Any industry. What matters is that people worked for you and did what needed doing, and you can tell us how you got them there.
  • You are smart. In your first month you will learn used cooking oil, DOT rules, a CRM, and software we built ourselves. You will be fine.
  • People like dealing with you. Drivers, restaurant owners, a distributor's sales reps, an insurance broker. You can talk to all of them in the same day and each one feels handled.
  • You act without being asked. You see a problem and it is dealt with before anyone else notices. You do not need a playbook. You will write the ones that do not exist yet.
  • You will get dirty. Grease, a vacuum truck, a restaurant back lot at 6am. Not every day, but when it matters, without being precious about it.
  • You are driven. You want to build something and be able to point at it, not keep a seat warm.
  • Clean driving record. A CDL is not required.

This is not for you if

  • You want a desk job with a fixed scope and a fixed list.
  • You wait for instructions before you move.
  • You are good at managing up and bad at managing down.
  • A greasy truck is beneath you.

What we offer

  • Pay: $100,000–$140,000.
