About Our Clinic

Elgin Eye Institute is a premier ophthalmology practice located in the brand-new, state-of-the-art Elgin Medical Institute Building in St. Thomas. Our mission is to provide compassionate, comprehensive, and high-quality medical and surgical eye care to our community.

As a foundational member of our clinical team, you will have the unique opportunity to help shape the culture and workflows of a modern practice from the ground up. We are looking for a dedicated professional who is excited to grow alongside us and deliver an exceptional experience for every patient.

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Ophthalmic Technician to join our growing practice. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional with a passion for clinical excellence. You will work closely with the Ophthalmologist to ensure efficient patient flow while providing high-quality diagnostic data and clinical assessment. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and values working with the latest ophthalmic technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Work-ups: Perform comprehensive preliminary patient work-ups, including visual acuity, intraocular pressure (Tonopen/Goldmann), and auto-refraction.
  • Medical History: Accurately document patient clinical and medical histories within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
  • Diagnostic Imaging: Conduct advanced diagnostic testing, including OCT scans, Humphrey Visual Field Testing, Topography, Fundus Photography, Optical Biometry, and A-scan ultrasounds.
  • Patient Flow: Proactively manage clinic flow to ensure a seamless and positive experience for patients.
  • Surgical Support: Assist with minor chair-side procedures and maintaining sterile environments for in-office treatments.
  • Administration: Assist with essential administrative tasks, including patient inquiries (calls/emails), triage referrals, and booking consults and/or follow-up appointments when necessary.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience: Previous experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or in a similar ophthalmology/optometry setting is preferred.
  • Certification: COA, COT, or COMT certification is considered a significant asset.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong command of modern ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and EMR systems.
  • Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills with a focus on compassionate, patient-centered care.
  • Adaptability: A "foundational" mindset—reliable, professional, and eager to contribute ideas to a new clinical environment and work harmoniously with other team members.

What We Offer

  • Competitive Compensation: Highly competitive hourly wage based on experience and certification.
  • Modern Workspace: Work in a brand-new, technologically advanced facility designed for optimal patient care.
  • Professional Growth: Opportunity for long-term career advancement and support for continuing education/certification.
  • Impact: A collaborative culture where your input directly influences the success of a new community landmark.

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
