Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Ophthalmic Technician, Optical Assistant or Optical Dispenser to join our friendly and supportive team at VSON.

This is a predominantly clinical, patient-facing role for someone who enjoys working directly with patients and is keen to further develop their skills within specialist ophthalmology and refractive eye care.

Working closely with our ophthalmologists and optometrists, you will perform ophthalmic diagnostic testing, prepare patients for consultations and procedures, and help ensure each patient receives an exceptional standard of care throughout their visit.

We provide comprehensive training and ongoing development across our diagnostic equipment and clinical procedures. As your skills and experience develop, there will also be opportunities to train in supporting our laser surgery lists and gain further exposure to refractive procedures and laser technology.

The role will also include some medical reception and administrative support from time to time as part of supporting the wider team and providing a seamless patient experience.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an optical or ophthalmic background who is patient-focused, technically minded, enjoys learning and wants to continue developing their career within specialist eye care.

  • Perform preliminary ophthalmic testing, including patient history, visual acuity and intraocular pressure measurements.
  • Operate specialised ophthalmic diagnostic and imaging equipment.
  • Accurately document patient information in electronic medical record system.
  • Prepare patients and clinical rooms for consultations, diagnostic testing and procedures.
  • Assist ophthalmologists, optometrists and the clinical team during specialist clinics.
  • Support the efficient flow of patients through the clinic.
  • Assist with minor procedures when required.
  • Administer ophthalmic drops, such as dilating drops, in accordance with practice protocols and under appropriate clinical direction.
  • Maintain clean, organised and appropriately stocked consulting and treatment rooms.
  • Follow practice procedures relating to infection control, equipment cleaning and sterilisation.
  • Provide medical reception and administrative support from time to time as required.
  • Work collaboratively with ophthalmologists, optometrists and the wider clinical and administrative team.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has some experience with ophthalmic testing or pre-testing, such as OCT, intraocular pressure measurements, autorefractors or similar diagnostic equipment.
  • Is passionate about providing excellent patient care and a five-star level of service.
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a compassionate approach to patients.
  • Is friendly, calm and professional and enjoys working directly with people.
  • Has strong technical aptitude and is comfortable learning advanced ophthalmic equipment and clinical software.
  • Has excellent attention to detail and understands the importance of accurate clinical documentation.
  • Is reliable, organised and able to work effectively in a busy clinical environment.
  • Enjoys learning and is enthusiastic about developing new clinical and technical skills.
  • Works collaboratively and genuinely enjoys being part of a team.
  • Is adaptable and willing to assist across different areas of the practice when required.
  • Has full working rights in Australia.

Previous hands-on experience with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment will be highly regarded. Training in our equipment, systems and procedures will be provided to the successful candidate.

Why Join Us?

This is an opportunity to take the next step from an optical or ophthalmic environment and continue developing your career within specialist eye care.

  • A supportive, professional and friendly team environment.
  • A varied clinical role where no two clinic days are quite the same.
  • Opportunities to grow your responsibilities as your skills and experience develop.

Employment, Location & Availability

This is a permanent part-time position, ideal for someone looking to continue developing their career while working 3–4 days per week.

The role will be primarily based at VSON in Fortitude Valley.

Availability to work Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays is required, with an additional day available depending on clinic requirements and the successful candidate's availability.

The role will also include some later shifts to support scheduled clinics and procedures, and approximately one Saturday per month.

The varied roster provides exposure to different clinics, procedures and areas of specialist eye care, with plenty of opportunity to continue developing your clinical and technical skills.
