OR Nurse

Job Summary

The OR Nurse in an outpatient clinic setting provides high-quality nursing care for patients undergoing elective, minor surgical, and outpatient procedures (e.g., excisions, biopsies, endoscopy, minor orthopedic or cosmetic procedures). This role focuses on efficient patient turnover, maintaining strict sterile conditions, delivering personalized patient education, and ensuring safe same-day discharge.

Key Responsibilities

1. Patient Prep & Clinic Flow

• Perform pre-procedure assessments, verifying patient identity, medical history, allergies, signed consent forms, and pre-op clearance.
• Prepare patients for same-day procedures, taking vital signs and answering pre-procedure questions to ease patient anxiety.
• Maintain an efficient clinic schedule by coordinating room prep, physician arrivals, and patient flow.

2. Procedure Room & Intra-Operative Care

• Set up and sterile-prep the minor operating/procedure room, ensuring proper surgical trays, equipment, and consumables are ready.
• Perform both circulating and scrub duties for outpatient minor surgeries.
• Conduct the official pre-procedure "Time-Out" safety check with the physician.
• Monitor patient vital signs and comfort levels during local or conscious sedation procedures.
• Accurately label and process pathology/biopsy specimens for laboratory transfer.
• Maintain complete counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.

3. Post-Procedure Recovery & Same-Day Discharge

• Monitor patients during immediate recovery in the clinic’s recovery area until stable.
• Administer post-procedure medications or dress surgical wounds as directed by the physician.
• Provide comprehensive home-care and wound-care instructions to the patient and their companion.
• Clear patients for safe discharge according to clinic protocol and schedule follow-up appointments.

4. Inventory, Sterilization & Infection Control

• Manage sterilization of surgical instruments (autoclaving) and maintain sterilization logs in compliance with healthcare standards.
• Perform regular inventory checks of surgical supplies, emergency drugs, and local anesthetics; report re-order needs promptly.
• Ensure procedure rooms and equipment are disinfected and sanitized between patients.

Qualifications & Requirements

Area Requirement

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Licensure

Registered Nurse (RN) with an active PRC license

Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) required

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred

Experience

Minimum 1 year of clinical nursing experience (Outpatient clinic, Ambulatory Surgery, Minor OR, or Emergency Room experience preferred)

Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency in sterile techniques, autoclaving, and minor surgical instrumentation

• Strong interpersonal skills suited for outpatient/client-facing care

• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinic environment
